Yes if they stop drinking alcohol.
When people stand up in those AA Meetings they say: "My name is blah blah and I'm an alcoholic." When they make that statement they're not saying they're only an alcoholic when they drink.
They're saying they know they're an alcoholic because one drink is too many and a thousand aren't enough.

Exactly. If it's such a serious crime then why don't we have a strict accountablity of such persons?

Some of the main reasons a person turns to alcohol is because of some degree of general unhappiness, desperation and/or escape from reality.  I'm aware there are numerous other unfortunate circumstances that start an individual down this path of destruction, as well
Alcohol consumption that is uncontrollable will cause a very long list of negative, destructive results. IMO nothing positive ever stems from alcoholism.  "Happiness" does not even enter into this particular disease.
I don't doubt that there are delusional alcoholics who believe they can fake their way through just about anything.  Keep in mind that DENIAL is real and powerful in these individuals.
A "happy" married life is one of the many things that cannot occur in these cases.  Every aspect of the alcoholic's life is the epitome of severe unhappiness, disappointment, failure and ultimate destruction of a worthwhile life.

"Mindless habit" is a most appropriate term for alcoholism.  This is precisely what occurs.  The mind is SHUT DOWN by the substance.  In time, with severe alcoholism, the mind is irreparably damaged.
