Is there a way of finding out for sure if someone was in the military if they claim they were?

If someone claims they were in the Vietnam war. is there a way of checking to see if they were telling the truth or if they were ever in the military at all?

There are more than 70 million former military records for veterans stored at the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis, Missouri. The records are available to the public through the Freedom of Information Act and the Privacy Act.
The general public can access military personnel records by completing Standard Form 180. Some of the information that must be given includes the name of the veteran, the service number or Social Security number, the branch of service, the date(s) of service and the date of birth. You should get a response within 10 days. You can either download the form online or request it via mail.

Thanks. The problem is I don't have a service # or SS# or branch. Only a name and DOB.

Dashingscorpio is 100% correct! Also, you get a packet of forms when you get discharged. Have him show you his DD214. It's one of the prime forms you get and every veteran I know, as well as me, keeps it filed. It gives you the status of your discharge and benefit information.

Thanks. Sadly this won't be an option, because I can not ask for the needed info. I guess there isn't a way to find out with the minimal info I have.

What I meant was that you can ask him to show you his DD214. I don't really know your situation, but if he was in the military, he would have one.

Maybe you can ask if you know his dates of service and social security number and you are a relative.
