Is everybody crazy?
Do you ever get the feeling that you as well as everyone else is... nuts. That the general personality and human nature is mentally ill. I don't mean, "there is something wrong with society". I mean, do you ever feel the the normal average human being is mentally ill. That we all have the schitzos. Paranoia. Delusion. Grandeur. Anti-social. Psychopathic. Manic. Ill. Sick. Do you ever feel like this and feel overwhelmed by the craziness. Not a metaphorical, but literal loony human nature. Or is it just me?
I believe most of us would call it "normal" today.
In past generations most people kept mum about their inner thoughts, personal pain, and unfulfilled dreams. They punched the time clock for 40 years, picked up their gold watch, collected their pension/social security, trusted their government, and counted their blessings!
In those days if you heard someone was seeing a therapist you gradually distanced yourself from them. Today the psychology and self-help business is booming! We all know people in therapy.
What changed? I believe our expectations of life changed.
We expect {more} than the previous generations. We measure success in dollars and notoriety. We're also less content to simply "stay in our own lane". So many people feel the need to "convince others" that their way is "the way". And anyone who doesn't see things their way must be an idiot!
We also don't handle disappointment very well.
"A bend in the road is not the end of the road unless you fail to make the turn." Perfection only exists in the dictionary.
Frustration occurs whenever one attempts to control things out of their control. We have to learn to tolerate differences as a way of life.
If our happiness is dependent upon what (other people) do or say then we're always going to be on edge. Live and let live!
"Don't sweat the small stuff" - In the end "It's all small stuff"
Your answer makes allot of sense. But it is still all very confusing and conflicting for me. I just don't know anymore, or never did. But live and let live, oh man, that could be my gospel for sure!
I guess sometimes it's best to stop trying to "control" everything and learn to ride the wave. They're going to be peaks and valleys in everyone's life
Life is a (personal) journey!
May as well enjoy the ride. In the end we're all going to die.
Yes, I see that accepting and playing the cards your dealt no matter what is the first prerequisite of a man or women.
We have the option to make our time on earth the most fun and adventurous it can be by striving to reach our dreams.
We need to learn not to become too emotionally invested in the results. One adage goes:
It's the journey not the destination!
Erasmus the 15th century Dutch philosopher thought everyone just a little bit wacky, one sandwich short of a picnic. He was a writer, theologian and scholar and presumably based his statement on personal experience!
I'm sure if he'd been alive today he'd recognise many traits in modern humans that were around in his time.
Nowadays we seem hell bent on labelling everyone who is a tiny bit eccentric mentally ill and I think this a retrograde step. It's a Catch 22 situation - the more psychologists and analysts we train up for work the more the statistics for mental illness go up and up!
The more we delve into the human psyche the more categories of 'madness' we come up with. Personality disorder is the classic diagnosis, used to box anyone who when a teenager shows the least bit of odd behaviour that doesn't fit into mainstream criteria. But who is measuring these normal mainstream responses in the first place? How do we standardise them?
There are many grey areas.
I welcome the idea of diversity within a population, and love mixing with and observing eccentric characters locally. This is the way it should be, communities mixing with each other as much as possible from the earliest point of family life.
Tolerance is key. Let's face it, we're all individuals with our own foibles and way of expressing, mostly conforming to societal norms but happily wacky some of the time. Those extreme cases of wild madness we rightly judge dangerous to society and themselves - we need to separate them unfortunately.
But I welcome mild craziness. If everyone was a clone or robot how dull life would be.
If Apathetic, and sheep like is crazy then most of the country is crazy.
