   What brings an offender back to crime? What are most influential factors to Recidivism in U.S.?
   
   While different state governments are releasing the inmates with minor offences, it is important to identify the reasons that contribute towards Recidivism in today's America. Share your opinions and suggestions for our better understanding of this issue.

   Criminal record....who wants to hire a criminal? No money. No where to go. Unless they have family/friend support: how are they supposed to make it out here, when people are already so judgemental they can't see straight? They need help in housing, jobs, and the ability to start fresh, not be forever condemned by their record: which in many cases, is a minor offense.
   I read that solitary confinement was a religious prescript: "get them closer to, God, like a priest of a nun".....it's this judgemental, puritan atmosphere which poisons all of USA, and never allows for forgiveness and a little humility about ourselves. imo

      Just another circumstance where we fall down in our responsibility as a society.I watched a document once, Norway has a very humane way of dealing with criminals: the idea is to change their ways. Not punishment, but redemption.

   Society doesn't offer too many great second chance opportunities.
   Anyone with a felony record is not likely to be trusted in a lot of companies. The ego also plays a factor if one finds them self stuck doing dead-end jobs such as a janitor, dishwasher, or short order cook in a greasy spoon restaurant. It wouldn't take much for an "old friend" to entice them into participating in a fast big money scheme.
   Last but not least when people get out of jail they usually have the same family and friends waiting to greet them. Very few people are willing to abandon those who have "had their back". It's also difficult to relocate when they're on parole. The easy thing to do is fall in with their old crowd again. Birds of a feather flock together.
   One has to be (strong willed and patient) to turn their life around.

   I think recidivism rates are so high because we fail to properly rehabilitate prisoners. We give them nothing to work with. They get out and go back to the same people and same places because they know no other way to live on the outside.

   The primary reason that an ex-offender goes back to crime is that there are very few options available to a person once they get a criminal record. Its a little know fact that the vast majority of employers are not allowed to hire felons due to insurance regulations. In most cases if a company knowingly hires a felon and something happens on the job that has legal ramifications then the company's insurance will not cover the incident and they could be held liable. This eliminates a large portion of the available job market for a ex-felons. No job equals no money. No money equals no food, home, or transportation. A person has to do something to survive.
