What are the best and safest products or methods out there for getting rid of dogs' tear stains?
I've been reviewing products like Angel Eyes and Eye Envy, but I think they both have antibiotics in them, which can be hard on dogs. There's a natural product by Anna that is topical. My vet tried tetracycline, and it didn't work. She suggested a larger dose. I don't know that I want to go that route.
Hi Victoria! Have not seen anything from you in a while, hope you are doing well.
No, do not go the route of more tetracycline. Since I do not want to post my hub link here, I copied this brief summary:
1. To remove the stains, you can try several herbal products (Halo Herbal Eye Wash or Pet Alive i-Clenz) or a homemade cornstarch paste with hydrogen peroxide. Mix a tablespoon of peroxide with the cornstarch until it the consistency is thick and pasty, apply it just under your dog´s eyes, and let it dry before washing it out. Peroxide can be irritating but much less so than bleach so I do not recommend you use that method.
2. To prevent most stains from coming back, you can add a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to your dog´s water. If the tear staining is caused by cheap dyes in the dog food, blocked tear ducts, or teething, this method may not help.
For a dog Gizmo´s size a teaspoon of the organic apple cider vinegar is enough. The cornstarch paste worked fine on my Maltese, so try that before purchasing any of those products like Angel Eyes.
And remember, this is not a life threatening condition. If it does not clear up with the cornstarch just keep the hair under the eyes clipped short and wipe his face every day. YOU DO NOT want to give him a product that will affect his health since this is such a mild condition.
Great to hear from you! Gizmo died last Jan. :-( I have a minipoodle and a ShihTzu mix, both under 10 lbs. The dogs and cats share water. How much ACV should I put in a large container (deep, round casserole dish)? I'll look at your hub! Thanks!
Sorry to hear about Gizmo. I would not put more than 2 tsp in the dish, even if large.Sometimes the taste turns them off. Watch the cats, they can dehydrate quickly, may need to provide another bowl up on a counter, just for them. Good luck with them
