   Do the Oscars matter anymore?
   
   Awards shows have become politicized, and some actors/actresses just can't seem to enjoy the moment. Instead they make political statements that just aggravate the audience.

   They never really ever mattered!
   Politics aside the Oscars is no more different than any other industry who has an annual awards presentation to salute their best. (plumbers, electricians. architects, engineers, or whatever)
   No one gets pumped up for the Annual Private Dentistry Awards!
   (Except professional dentists!)
   The only reason the Oscars are popular is because most people go to movies and have celebrity favorites that they root for.
   A year goes by and most people can't remember who won Best Actress or Best Picture last year. The only speeches that are remembered are either "emotional", funny, or political.
   When I was young I really thought the selection was based upon who the Academy voters thought was the best.
   After moving to California I saw "Awards Season" was much like a political campaign where studios spend millions of dollars on advertisements in trade newspapers to get voters to go see and consider their entry. Ads in "Variety" and "Hollywood Reporter"
   Sometimes they'd host private screenings with dinner/cocktails afterwards or mail out their DVDs to the homes of Academy voters. An actor's popularity within the industry is also important.
   No one wins an Oscar without some studio politically campaigning for their stars, director, or producers to win.
   The "performance" isn't usually the main deciding factor.
   Imagine hearing: "And the award for Best Architect goes to..."

   I really like hearing about people giving a darn. I have not ever watched one for more than a couple of minutes. We used to have great parties surrounding them. People made much better food than for the superbowl.
   
   I really hope that this year it generates a lot of work for folks in the service industry. That is cool.
   
   By brother was nominated once as part of a cast. He had a ball going. But his lover in the movie was some really really beautiful actress so of course he did.

   I am done with the Oscars or any Hollywood award show. I have zero interest in hearing foolish celebrities inane political speeches....not to mention, the other politics you mentioned.
   Anyway, I'll check the Internet sometime later this week to find out how Hacksaw Ridge did since that is the only movie I've seen this year. Otherwise, I could care less.

      Global warming and the oscars. The footprint of energy used is shameful. How can these people justify the waste of earths resources for such an elitist production. Just the lumins are shameful to Global warming. Hypocrites?

   I suppose the Oscars matter to Star-gazers and movie buffs and people who are bedazzled by all things "Hollywood."  Since I qualify as none of those people, I've never been into the Oscars. 
   I actually tried to watch the Academy Awards a time or two and fell asleep, which tells me how interested I was. 
   I'm sure they matter very much to those who win the prized statue!  All the information is documented in black & white & Technicolor for all time, should we ever care to know all about the Oscars through the years.....  P
