    About smog tests, does the machine automatically fail vehicles that are 300,000+ miles?

    I failed smog.  They told me to change plugs and wires, oil air filter and I put another rotor, and they did the timing.  And I put new pcv valve.  The first time I failed the hydrocarbons was only 1. Now the second time after all this work they are telling me the hydrocarbons are 11.  Huh? What?

    who did all work that was suggested ,if it was the shop callem on it,dont know what state your in but there should be an agency like bar bur.of auto repair with state gov. theyhave ref. and arbatration.if you did the work do some testing , comp. , vacume to pinpoint problem the bar has it own testing and will tell you what the problem is . hope many more miles daid

    yes i would ask them to show you their work and then maybe get a second opinion elsewhere, you will know if they are trying to take advantage or not!

    Failure is from measured exhaust gasses, not "automatic". The more advanced your ignition timing is, the higher the hydrocarbons will be. Perhaps retard the timing a bit and retest it.
