Presumably as a company, Google's main priority is generating profit, not providing users with quality content even though they like to tell us that is one of their aims.
If a page is getting lots of traffic that is steadily increasing, but they're making less money out of it because it's taking traffic from other pages that generate more Adsense revenue, wouldn't that be a reason to downgrade the page's ranking?
I have often thought about this too - surely it is a conflict of interest within Google in terms of putting sites with adsense on at the top of the rankings, although I don't think I have seen this in practice.
Considering that we have one sad little adsense ad, clear at the bottom of our hubs and that other sites have them strewn everywhere, it doesn't seem likely that Google is assigning ranking based on adsense income. If it were we'd never see the top 100.
I rarely completely disagree, but this assumption couldn't be further from the truth.
Google does truly want to give its users the best results. Why? Because the moment they stop doing this, people will look to other search engines. Google makes literally peanuts compared to what they make from ads shown on the search results page. They want people to continue seeing and clicking ads on their search results.
As part of giving people the best user experience, having a lot of ads takes away from the user experience when not done well. Therefore, even if you use Adsense ads but have huge banner ads on the top of the page you will likely drop in rankings.
The ads Google shows on their search results page are thoroughly scruitinized and advertisers paying for them ensure that they are perfectly targetted because it's a lot of money and ROI is important. Compare the ads you see on the search results page and that on an Adsense website. Which one is better related to the content?
Google would rank a website with no ads higher than a website with Adsense ads if every other factor were 100% the same.

I used to use the revenue to pay bills, but am now living back at home with my parents so my bills are much smaller. I plan on using my revenue to move to California where I can get a higher paying job and hopefully have more time to produce more hubs. It'll take a bit of money to do that so I've...

I have tried a few but they are either too difficult to understand how to get started, or just plain not as good as Hubpages.
