    My all-time favorite:  "It's better to remain silent and be thought of a fool, then to speak up and remove all doubt."

    Also, it's not exactly a quote (it's many), but I love the Desiterata by Max Ehrmann:

    Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
    and remember what peace there may be in silence.
    As far as possible without surrender
    be on good terms with all persons.
    Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
    and listen to others,
    even the dull and the ignorant;
    they too have their story.

    Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
    they are vexations to the spirit.
    If you compare yourself with others,
    you may become vain and bitter;
    for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
    Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

    Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
    it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
    Exercise caution in your business affairs;
    for the world is full of trickery.
    But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
    many persons strive for high ideals;
    and everywhere life is full of heroism.

    Be yourself.
    Especially, do not feign affection.
    Neither be cynical about love;
    for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
    it is as perennial as the grass.

    Take kindly the counsel of the years,
    gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
    Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
    But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
    Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
    Beyond a wholesome discipline,
    be gentle with yourself.

    You are a child of the universe,
    no less than the trees and the stars;
    you have a right to be here.
    And whether or not it is clear to you,
    no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

    Therefore be at peace with God,
    whatever you conceive Him to be,
    and whatever your labors and aspirations,
    in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

    With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
    it is still a beautiful world.
    Be cheerful.
    Strive to be happy.

    I like living. I have been sometimes wildly,despairingly ,acutely miserable,racked with sorrow,but through it all i still certainly know that, to be alive is a grand thing.

    -- AGATHA CHRISTIE.

    This sentence gives me strength in time of despair.

    One of my favorite quotes is by Sydney Harris, it goes like this: Winners make commitments; losers make promises. I never forgot when I read that over twenty years ago, it blew me away. I even wrote a hub on this quote. Called "Always Choose to Make Commitments Not Mere Promises."

    So the Angel said: 'thy phantasy has imposed upon me, & thou oughtest to be ashamed.'
    I answer'd: 'we impose on one another, & it is but lost time to converse with you whose works are only Analytics.'
    - William Blake - The Marriage of Heaven and Hell.

    This.  I like this quote, because it sums up my feelings about those times I wind up arguing/debating with people over everything.

    I love quotes. I get obsessive about recording them if I let myself. Here are a couple from a great British TV show called Peep Show:

    "I suppose doing things you hate is just the price you pay to avoid loneliness."

    "Mark, do you have to live quite so relentlessly in the real world?"

    My most favorite (which I have tattooed on my arm) is "Pretty Is Never Beautiful" - self-explanatory

    Next would be "Life is finite, while knowledge in infinite" - Zhuang Zi.

    “Years go by will I still be waiting for somebody else to understand... sometimes I hear my voice and it's been here, silent all these years...”
    “Our generation has an incredible amount of realism, yet at the same time it loves to complain and not really change. Because, if it does change, then it won't have anything to complain about.”
    “The violence betwen women is unbelievable. Women try to make each other crawl so that their knees are bleeding.”
    “I think all the boys that write the screaming stuff would write the best love songs.... because they have the most to hide. The guys that are in the most pain are usually the ones with the biggest hearts.” - Tori Amos

    "What if all the world around you isn't quite as it seems? If you look at your reflection is that all you want it to be?" - Trent Reznor

    The last few are lyrics but they work for me (:

    Like you I have SO many favorites.  But, these 2 I have posted at my desk... keeps me grounded and helps put my life in perspective.  I have a tendency to worry and stress over the little things in life and to lose track of the here and now... Here they are.  My apologies for the length.

    "for a long time it seemed to me that life was about to begin -real life. but there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. at last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life. this perspective has helped me to see there is no way to happiness. happiness is the way. so treasure every moment you have and remember that time waits for no one. happiness is a journey, not a destination." -souza

    and

    "To laugh often and much, to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends, to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch... to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.  This is to have succeeded!" -Emerson

    In order:

    "They've got you looking so hard for any flaw that sooner or later it's all you ever see." Ethan Hawke in Gattaca.

    I love the film of Gattaca. In fact it opens up with a few interesting quotes, but this particular "quote" is my favorite line in the movie because it explains how I felt when they diagnosed me with Asperger's Syndrome in 1996.

    Basically all I was to any of them was a disorder. My name was Asperger's to these people and they refused to see me as NateSean.

    "Advertising is legalized lying," H.G. Wells.

    Well, damn it if this isn't true. Oh, and have you ever done one of those taste tests at the mall before? They're rigged so you'll choose the name brand.

    "One must have sympathy for the Devil. After all, God wrote all the books." William "The Man" Blake.

    I was introduced to William Blake in high school, first by Anne Rice and then by my English teacher. But the point is this particular quote is my favorite of his because I have gone through life always being judged guilty by people who never wanted to hear my side of the story. They were just interested in getting the problem over with and kicking me in the ribs was the convenient way to do it.

    Do we know the Devil's side? Hell no. Does anyone generally care? No of course not because it's easier to think of him as "evil" because were told so and people don't want to think. It hurts.

    Joh 14:12  Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

    It is said by Jesus Christ, love it because through him I can do greater works.

    "It's good to be a seeker, but sooner or later you have to be a finder.  And then it is well to give what you have found a gift unto the world for whoever will accept it."  Jonathan Livingston Seagull

    This quote resonated with me from an early age, starting about the time I read the Richard Bach book.  I used it as my senior quote in my high school yearbook.  I like the idea of giving, and I like the idea of giving thoughts and ideas to those who will accept them.

    I think about this quote often, especially when I'm in a bad mood. It teaches me to keep playing and keep my spirits up.
