McConnell has got to despise Trump behind closed doors.
Trump has expressed dissatisfaction with the $600 per person stimulus package, that McConnell and the Republicans have agreed to. He and the Democrats wants $2,000 per person. I could probably work with the $1200.00 we all received in the first round, as $2,000.00 seems a bit much. But, in our current economic state, $600.00 is paltry.
I love to see McConnell in an "either you do it or else position". Chestnuts roasting over an open fire, that is my favorite carol.
Of course, he does not care about the objections of the Democrats, but to cross Trump who has already accused him of lackluster support in his quest for an election redo, this could well be the coup de gras.
If he takes the road of resisting Trump, he could be seen as the stingy Scrooge at a time where if he wants to remain Senate Majority Leader, he needs to be seen as playing nice with the Trumper faction of the party who supports Trump's every move during the critical Georgia Senate runoffs. This can and will turn a fissure into a chasm between standard GOP and Trumpers. That can do nothing but give the Democrats the advantage.
Or, McConnell, who has been the "stick in the mud", "the fly in the ointment" and the "pain in the a$$" regarding the second round of stimulus for months must now eat crow.
Can he digest it all?
Has the King of the Senate been placed in check with only unpleasant moves as options?
But, this is your show ladies and gentlemen, "You pick the winner".
With all the non-pandemic relief stuff I am hearing is in this emergency pandemic relief bill, I think McConnell chestnuts will have a lot of company over that fire.
Pres. Trump says he won't sign the bill without amendments, one of which is your stimulus amount point. I want the president to win on this one. Not so much for the $2000, but mostly to get rid of the crazy stuff in the bill. McConnell will just have to do whatever he has to.
GA
GA, what constitutes "crazy stuff" in the bill for you?
I was wrong. I can only refer you to this: https://hubpages.com/politics/forum/350 … ost4167442
I was wrong to conflate stuff in the Omnibus spending package with the Covid Relief bill.
GA
I have since, this comment, been educated that I was wrong about those extra inclusions in the Covid Relief bill. My bad.
GA
Congress passed a mammoth coronavirus relief and government (a fused bill) spending package late Monday.
Both chambers easily approved the more than $2 trillion legislation and voted to pass it. Congressional leaders attached $900 billion in pandemic aid to a $1.4 trillion measure to fund the government through Sept. 30.
I think the confusion comes in after President Trump came out with statements that he would not sign the bill due to what he considered all the pork that was attached to the Government funding measure. He asked in a Flippen way more or less to move cash from the spending bill to the COVID relief aid bill.
What I found frustrating it well appears Trump did not work on either part of this huge Government output of cash. That fused bill was bipartisan and voted in. It is Trump's job to be involved with any budget spending. And he is well aware America provides foreign aid. He is aware that pork is attached to most spending bills. He dropped the ball and seemed unaware of what was in either part of the bill.
He cried foul after the fact, he should have been aware of what was going into the bills as they were constructed. This is the responsibility of his job, I think in the past spending bills he did much the same, he complained about the bills and did not appear to be aware of what was in them. He may have trusted his team to work on the bills, and they either did not keep him informed or he refused to take a part in the construction of spending bills.
At this point he signed it, and all the uproar he caused looks like a cheap politicking ploy. But, this ploy was unacceptable due to many American's suffering from lack of funds, many need the stimulus as well as unemployment to pay their bills and eat.
What?!? You are recognizing that Trump behaved like a selfish pr!ck?
Noooooo.....
There's some hope when people can see the fault in Trump's misrepresenting or complete lack of involvement in the budgeting process. Bravo.
I am not sure many have recognized my stance on Trump. I have been critical when it was truly deemed. I have also been supportive of some of his policies and what I felt were accomplishments. I have always pointed out his character flaws, as well as IMO his good problem-solving skills. I have defended some of the media hit jobs when I felt the media sought to sensationalize a story by reporting it out of context.
One could say I dissected Trump into having many attributes as well as some horrendous personality flaws.
In one respect with this latest ploy, he has pointed out our Government has a huge problem with pork-barrel spending. But to me, it was obvious he did not have anything to do constructing this duel bill.
And he liked his feet at a point in time we are experiencing one of the biggest crises in our history. I agree a very poor selfish maneuver.
". . . selfish prick! OMG! I am telling your husband!
GA
My confusion was not recognizing that the two major components—the Covid relief bill and the government funding bill, were sent to Pres. Trump as a 'spending package'.
There is a lot to argue about in the spending bill, but it is a false impression, (as I learned, to my chagrin), to conflate the two bills.
It would be informative to know who presented what parts of the spending bill. My Conservative bias leads me to believe the most outrageous items, (funding gender studies in Pakistan?), would be Democrat inserted funding.
It might be fun to watch for the Liberal corrections to my biased perception. :-0
GA
Well, GA, I tend to have a liberal bias and yet I say that appropriating funding to the sort of thing you mentioned is a waste of money better spent to increase money going to individuals and families if it is to go anywhere.
"Then you’ve got to fund the FBI, Department of Homeland Security, the foreign aid budget is 1% of all American spending. Pakistan is a place I really worry about; 85 countries a woman can’t open up a bank account without her husband’s signature, she can’t inherit property. If you’re a young girl in Pakistan, life is pretty tough, so we’re trying to make life better for women throughout the world."

It well appears by Trump's lackluster attitude for over a month about what went into the spending part of the bill, as well as the COVID stimulus part. He tweeted a few times he wanted more in regards to increasing the stimulus checks to $1200.00 or more. But he had no interest in what I can see as all that pork that was being added. He should have been aware of what was going on, after all, it is customary for the president to present a spending package to Congress. He either knew nothing about what was being proposed or he is just crying foul to cause a political stir. Either way, at this point, this is disgusting.
It also perplexes me that he left for a vacation while others in America wait for this big problem to be solved. His character is really showing, he put himself before the people. And his base has taken note of this.
Just an added thought --- I have never recognized Trump as a
Republican. He hijacked the party and actually has taken plenty of them down. The King of the Senate may at this point be part of that very crew.
If I had to pick who gets their way on the bill it will either be Trump or he will leave the mess for Biden. If he does this, he will lose many of his base. But, at this point, I don't think he cares.
Trump has put forth an untenable position, one that would make even Bernie Sanders wince.
It is a position that he knows cannot be taken seriously, so what is the end game?
He is deliberately humiliating the GOP power brokers and creating all the more pandemonium that not going to help the GOP in the coming Georgia Senate runoffs.
As you say, he doesn't care and will bring it all down with him.
These last weeks he has become quiet over the past weeks, not sure what next?
I'd feel better if I knew the WH doc was pumping him full of antipsychotic meds, the Chief of Staff was plotting ways to keep him ignorant (and out of everyone's hair), and Melania was keeping him busy with golf and cheeseburgers at Mar-a-Lago.
That truly is all he is fit to do. Just a few weeks left....and the fumigation of the White House can begin.
Mitch's 'nuts' here. I saw something about Trump's a$$ in another thread.
Why the sudden potty mouths?
I want Trump to win, but the reality is that there really is no "winning" with these two at the helm of anything. Neither is motivated by caring or love of country, just how much power they can keep.
