I think hubbers should be able to flag spam on the forums. I'm not sure if there is an option to do this already but I think it would be good. Even though there is not too much spam, keeping HP forums spam free 99% with the help of actual hubbers will go along way. I feel as though the report button is putting to much pressure on the HP staff members and it feels so unnessacry to bother them with "some guys spamming".
There is already an option. Click the button "report" to do so.
Does it actually flag it as spam or does it send a message to moderators?
I'm not sure where the pressure comes from. The report button does the job fine. Whether it's reporting spammers, scammers or out of control members.
"You are sending a private message to the HubPages team" it just seems so personel.
perhaps he is suggesting a method like youtube or yahoo answers, where a high proportion of thumbs down by community members results in the message being hidden and reported, such a feature could have its purpose...as the staff is rather small.
I was reading a more gray hat forum recently on a thread about hubpages and one of the members specifically pointed out that hubbers were protective and flag happy
If that same zeal could be directly targetted to the forums so that the obvious spam posts were hidden due to user feedback until a (the?) mod had a chance to check why, than the incentive to do such would be effectively removed
well put, more on the direction I was on, however thumbs down could be interperated as not agreeing the post rather than thinking it is spam. On that note a thumb up and thumb down system for post popularity could be ok aswell.
We are working towards a system along these lines. The first step will be to add a "reason" drop down to report link (ie. spam, personal attack, duplicate, note, etc.). The second step will be to determine who's reports are upheld as accurate consistently. The final step will be to automatically remove or hide reported posts when based on the reports we feel confident that a post is in fact spam, etc.
Sure ... Hand me the hammer Paul ... I'll bop these spammers into next week. You can trust ole Yoshi ...
On another note, I flagged a whole bunch tonight - we had two nuts vying for the idiocy award and Maddie lost - she gets to clean up the mess. On a good note, I did try to make some of the reports at least interesting, so as to avoid the doldrum of click ... delete ... click ... delete.
Ah, the days when I had my own forums. I would just mute the little cockroaches, and there they sat, posting away, totally unaware they were in their own little world where no one else could hear them and their messages would silently fall off the server within the hour. No fuss - no argument - no spammers.
Yeah good Idea, thansk for the response.
Geez, if that were implemented there'd be an avalanche of smiting on the religious forums! :lol;
Still, knowing where people stand on a comment can often be lost in the 100's or replies that a thread might get. Valid point though. Thumbs up.
thats not a bad thing, if like minded folk want to chat endlessly about how great their gods are, than let them.
I dont see any positive goals in those who jump into obvious pro-anything conversations just to stir up arguments with their differing opinions.
Most intelligent people enjoy a debate (but they prob wont be found in a religious forum on hubpages) but if the thread or conversation wasnt started in the spirit of debate and one chooses to go stir them up...sure, why not, thumbs down, by all the zealots then thye dont have to read it..its not uncommon for off topic posts to be removed or blocke din forums
The hidden message isnt deleted nor is it a neg on the account, they can even be viewed by someone with a little extra effort of clicking a link
Imagine how many trolls would lose the joy of starting a fight and getting attention, and maybe write a hub or two instead
In this case a thumbs down won't nessacarily be marked as spam. Rather it will show the general consensus of how viewers felt about the post. Look at the Obama peace prize threads, I do believe that so many people just jumped on the against bandwagon just to start a good debate (which I am all for). However, what I would like to know is what posters feel about the comments that had been posted via thumbs up or down rather than 100-posts on trying to shut down the other persons point.
Just went to report spam and low and behold saw the new 'flag spam feature'. Well kind of anyway. It was a drop down list for reasons which included spam, personel attack, hate and other.
Nice work hub pages staff!

I just had a comment in one of my hubs with a self-promotional link, which is against HubPages' terms of service. Of course I denied the comment. But then I went to that Hubber's profile and checked his activity. He had posted similar comments in dozens of other Hubber's Hubs. When I looked at...

all the people I see spamming the forums are signing up long enough to post on the forum but aren't writing any hubs. So ... I was thinking. Why not require three hubs from a person before they can post in the forums? They would still be allowed to read to their heart's content, but they would need...

There are a lot of us who haven't been feeling safe on the forums. They've felt stalked, harassed and browbeaten.Sadly, some folks go with the letter of the law, but not the spirit of it in their posts. For an excellent post on why we need Forum Moderators, check out what Makingamark says here...

How do Hubbers get banned from forums?I've noticed people on Hubpages mentioning that they've been, or are being, banned from the forums. How does this happen? What rules do you have to break to get banned?

I along with others are tired of the never ending spam in the Q and A section. Some of us prefer the more civil (well sometimes more civil) Q and A over the forums. Please start something that slows the overwhelming amount of spam that has been there lately. Implement something that keeps newbies...

I have been seeing a lot of forum spam lately. I think it could be *greatly* reduced by only allowing new sign-ups to post under the help section until they've published one hub. After they've published their first hub, then they could post anywhere. I think this would deter a lot of the people who...
