Scary Scenario

   So you are driving on a highway like @  3am in the morning.  Everything around you is very dark, no light can be seen for miles. You must use your high beams for it it pitch BLACK!  All of a sudden your GPS freezes and you cannot get it to work so you get off at the closest exit hoping you'll find a gas station.  (Keep in mind you have another 6 hours of driving to do) The exit that you have chosen to get off for some reason doesn't seem like it will do you any good, but what the heck you keep going.  The exit now turns into a dirt road that is barren open fields to your left and right with an occasional barn or desolate building in sight.  Something tells you to make a u turn and get back on the highway, but you feel that you are bound to find something, you have to you're from the city! (What the hell that has to do with anything?...ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, city mentality)  The more you drive the more you feel like a character in one of Steven Spielbergs  movies and low and behold as you drive up the hill and begin to drive down you see a body hovering over a vehicle with the hood open.  Your high beams get their attention and they try to get you to stop to help....What would you do?   
   
   Ooops I forgot to say what I would do......keep it moving...sorry ya'll think what you must. I love my life and I really don't like surprises of any kind they bring out the worst in me.  It's not pretty at all.  If I am not in a bad mood I'll wind the window down from a distance and communicate, or whatever safe comes to mind at first!

      I was recently in the situation, and I ended up finding a town and got back on track.
      
      But, I did find your scenario, interesting when it happened to me and funny that it happened to you. I liked the way you wrote the OP and that's what is funny.

      Take the plate the make of the vehicle and call 911 and let them know the exact location of the broken down vehicle but I would not stop because you never know who the person is or there intention.

   Have the doors locked and my cell phone open and ready to dial 911, (or better yet, get a spouse or friend on the phone and keep 'em there in case THEY need to call 911), pull up, roll down the window slightly, ask if you can help by calling someone,  and go from there.   DO NOT get out of the car! 
   
   
   Your story reminds me of a Night Gallery episode (or some such program)  where a guy picks up a hitchhiker;  the driver tells the passenger a scary story.   Then the passenger asks do you want to see something really scary?   The driver says yes.  The passenger turns his head for a few seconds;  when he turns back around,  his face has transformed into a monster!   ...I think it was Dan Akroyd who played that role.....anyway, it was scary good fun!

   Maybe Im the wrong person to ask, I am not from the city. I live in one of those scary places with a feild and a barn. I am releved when I pull off the highway and see no lights, means I am almost home. I dont own a GPS, and I am pretty good at reading road maps and signs. BUT, if I ever see someone in distress, depending on the time of day/night, I will either call the state police to let them know there is a car off the road, or roll down my window just a crak to ask them if I can call someone for them. I dont turn my car off or anything like that. Its really sad our world has gotten so bad, that you cant risk helping someone that may be in genuine need, because peopel WILL pretend they need help, to steal a car or whatever,

   I would try to be street wise, and slow down enough to get a description of the vehicle and people, call highway patrol, report the car broke down, and ask them where in the heck I am, and where will I end up if I continue in this direction.  Perhaps look at a map??
