The English Patient - the poetry of the book was transferred to the cinematography.
Raise the Red Lantern - again, incredible cinematography. A Chinese painting come to life.

I'm glad you asked that question. I loved some of the replies already. Based on visual appearance, I would add Dances with Wolves just for the sweeping Western landscape. I agree with Lord of the Rings, L. of Arabia and the Dark Crystal was fabulous. I wish Jim Henson was still with us.

From a cinematic visual standpoint, several come to mind.

    The Wizard of Oz
    Pan's Labyrinth
    Cinema Paradiso
    The Cider House Rules
    Days of Heaven
2001: A Space Odyssey (requires a big screen to get the full, expnasive impact..looks boring on a regular TV)

or for a very stylized look:
    Amelie
    Oh Brother, Where Art Thou

Great topic. Good Cinematography is my number one need when I pick out movies. All my favorite films are visually interesting.

    The bests are:

    Bladerunner

Dark City--- A lot like Blandrunner in that it has noir aspects and combines many  different eras. The colors were wonderful. Green and yellow were big, which is especially unique in noir where black and red are the main themes.

    In The Mood For Love

Leave Her to Heaven- It's one of the first colorized noirs and it works so well in how the color illuminates the characters and their emotions in relation to the story. It's just an awesome movie in general.

LOTR triligy, the entire movie looked real and vivid and even the darkest cave I thought was beautiful in its own way. I loved Avatar, the bright colors that popped off the screen were amazing.

I loved the way that Sin City was filmed and even though it's not a movie, at least 100%, Heavenly Blade.  That game was amazingly stunning!
