What does your government do for you in your country?

   Hey everyone,
   
   I have been exploring and researching government in different countries and I am curious about what people receive from their government in their particular country.
   
   For example, I am from Canada, and we have several government programs that are worth mentioning that are designed to improve the lives of Canadians. 
   
   1.  Our Parental Leave Program.  New parents are entitled to a full year of benefits before they must return to work.  You may receive up to 415 dollars per week for 52 weeks and you can split those weeks with your spouse if you want.  After your year is up, you may return to your old job, work for 3 months (300 hours or so) and become pregnant again, and be entitled to another year of parental leave.  And the cycle continues with as many children as you have.
   
   2.  Our Health Care System.  Any time, anywhere, any treatment, we are entitled to it, with no payments whatsoever.  and yes, we pay for it...through our taxes, so we notice it a little less than paying 30,000 all in one shot for a week long hospital stay.  And we are reimbursed for any travelling required for treatments that are not available in our area.
   
   3.  Our Self-Employment Assistance Program.  At any time if you are laid off, have been or are on unemployment assistance, or parental leave in the last 5 years, you can apply to start your own business.  The government will guide you, train you, and pay you to start a viable business.  This is a very valuable program.  Receivers of this program will get 1600 per month in payments for one full year and everything they make with the business is theirs 100 percent and does not need to be claimed.
   
   So please, join in, I am very curious to know about other programs in the world and how things work in other countries.  I will be waiting impatiently

   rhamson, I actually wanted to hear about YOUR governments programs in your country, not how ours couldn't work in your country.  Of course, not everything we have here will work everywhere else, but I would like to know about what good programs your country has that works for you.  thanks.

      With regard to good programs this country has there is some that help the poor as they are unable to help themselves with the burdens that come with it.  The down side is that the level between abject poverty and sustanability is far too low.  If you can make enough to see the light the government cuts you off before you really get started.
      
      Anyone can get healthcare as most hospitals accept all who are sick.  You will probably get saddled with a medical bill that will follow you the rest of you life but you will live to pay another day.
      
      One of the best things we have in America is the capitalist system of business.  Everything is for sale and at a profit!  If you have the drive and a good plan you can be very successful and rich beyond your wildest dreams.  Then you need to buy a congressman to help you make it bigger and keep more of it.
      
      I am sorry to sound so jaded but this is a country of survival of the fittest.  If you don't get yours someone is always in line to take it.

   We have a great program for the banks.  We give them money to cover their toxic assets (bad mortgages).  Then we allow them to keep the properties the american taxpayer just covered the mortgage on.  Great program for the elitist banking cartels.

   Australia has benefits similar to Canada. I do like that our Federal (as opposed to state) Government installed free lightbulbs and roof insulation in low income homes out of our stimulus package. It makes a lot of sense, as it will reduce costs and lower fuel use long term, so it is a good investment in my view.
