Can somebody tell me why the earthquake in Haiti the main news in cnn?

   I don't understand this: There was earthquake in differnt parts of the world, there was Tsunamis. But the earthquake in Haiti has been the main news in CNN for the last few weeks,since it happened. Is it because, lots of Haiti natives are living in US or because of the political reasons? or some other reasons. I am just curious.

      Do you want the good reasons or the selfish reasons?
      
      The good reasoning would be that the devastation is so huge and dire that the bumper sticker coverage we usually see is not adequate.  Americans seem to forget that sending some care packages and medical help will be enough and that we can go about our little lives without any further stress about it.  We did our part.
      
      Another reason could be that it is a ratings bonanza much like the OJ trial.  people tune in to see what is going to happen next and are glad it did not happen to them.  Whay do you slow down to a crawl to look at a car accident?  Same type of condition.
      
      Or it could be a combination of both where the help it brings the country is good for business as well.

      It could be that actually reporting news outside of death and destruction doesn't interest them! God knows they didn't report anything of substance about Obama.

      I think it is a combination of a lot of reasons.  The overall devastation was one of the worst (percentage wise) since Haiti was already so poverty laden.  Add to that the number of Haitians living in the US, add again the implications of having the reporters down there.  It cost CNN and other news agencies to get those reporters and their teams down there so they need to maximize the coverage.  And many of these crews are really offering concrete help, not just in the way of media coverage - their skills and willingness to "lend their hands" is a valuable resource - more folks to help so the reporters don't necessarily want to come back yet.  And on the business side again, if they are able to help, CNN can probably write off part of the costs to charity.  Interlocking reasons that in the long run can benefit a lot of people.

   Side issue about the car wreck question - people are always insulting about slowing down going past wrecks but good grief, you should! You don't know what child is wandering about in shock and fear, (or adult for that matter), there's glass in the road, you may need to move out of the way for emergency workers, there are so many reasons to not speed past!

   Because there is more interest in the Big Events that cause instant catastrophe than the small every day events like the Million people are year on the African continent that die of Malaria.

   Because they need donations to keep coming ( they did say this was already a poor country before the earthquake ) , these people need help and if this mess goes off screen we will all forget about them.

      Well said tipperary. Besides, thinking about other people for a change, who are in a much worse situation, is comforting to the obese nations who can't stop moaning about the financial crisis.

   I hate it when the media beats a dead horse, BUT this isn't really a dead horse. These people really do need help and as long as they are there helping and reminding us that there are more important things going on than what Miley Cyrus is up to, I don't mind. I wish I had more freedom so I could get down there and do something.
