What is the most scary and/or gory computer game thats out there?
Residence Evil 5, Mad World, The Viking, and Dead Space 2
Oh boy, definitely my style of game! I would recommend anything listed below:
Dead Space 2
F.E.A.R 1 and 2
Resident Evil 4 and 5
Clive Barkers Jericho
Siren: Blood Curse (Not your typical FPS)
And my personal favorite, Condemned:Criminal Origins
If you can find S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl that's also a good one but it's from the UK which makes it harder to find. I'm sure there is a download somewhere for it.
All recommendations given here are quite good choices, however it depends on your team of 'scary' and your type of gore. Look to Doom and Deadspace for tons of blood when you shoot/kill things and enjoy that type of excessiveness, because that's essentially what games tend to offer. More blood and gibs than you would expect.
Games like F.E.A.R, Jericho and Condemned 2: Bloodshot are more of a thriller [still plenty violent and bloody] type of game that can and will actually scare the hell out of you.
Fallout:New Vegas isn't a horror game but has some incredibly violent kills in it, from human enemies to monsters alike. Believe it or not, this game scared the bejeezus out of me several times when sneaking through unlit hallways to be sledgehammered by an enormous mutated human with a cloaking device from behind. I don't scare easily, but some things just catch you completely off-guard and are intended to do so.
Resident Evil is my favorite choice of them, as it combines a good amount of blood and gore both from your action-oriented kills, cutscenes and general ambiance of the game; you can get much more of a 'horror' feel from a game of that style because Capcom puts work into the detail of it. There's a scene (not to be a complete spoiler) in RE5 where you're forced to walk down this long hallway with light projecting shadows on the wall beside reveals show blood stains and mutilated corpses..which leads to other zombie goodies and fun stuff.
Top picks are definitely the Resident Evil series, Jericho, Fallout: New Vegas and Condemned for some potential scares [ideally played in the dark with sound] or Doom, Dead Space and Manhunt for the more violent style.
Violent as hell, but probably won't scare you: GTA, Doom.
Plenty of violence/gore and likely to make change your pissed-on pants: Fallout, Jericho, Condemned.
Lastly, if you have a good gaming system, Steam offers [may be available elsewhere too] for purchase this game called Cryostasis. It's not popular, I'd never heard of it but the game is VERY environment driven and horror-oriented. I can only play but so much of it in 1 sitting as the game relies more on it's theme than it's action to please the player, and it does a good job.
The most scared I've ever been when seeing someone play a game.... Was when I walked in to my house to find my rather feminine brother on Sing Star.
I get chills just thinking about about. *shudder*
As far as gore goes, I would definitely search up Postal 2, probably the goriest and most disgusting game i've ever seen or played, for scary on the other hand, you should see Amnesia: The Dark Descent.
Silent Hill, as a game series is one of the best for being scary. Gore varies throughout the game, depending on where you are.
I've heard good things about Dead Space, but I haven't played it. I hear it's really scary.
I don't recommend any Resident Evil after 2 for being scary. But, I still enjoy RE 4 and RE 5 for being fun action packed shooters. However, scary, not really. More like, a lot of tension when you come to certain areas.
Pretty much anything with Clive Barker's name on it in video game form has been good for being scary. One such game was an old PC game, Clive Barker's Undying.
Ah, that game is crazy! Ghosts, appear out of thin air with no warning! Werewolves move incredibly fast and leap freakishly far often catching you by surprise if not careful. Bosses are intense. Oh, it was an amazing horror game. The graphics, still look good after all these years. Dreamcast quality, at least.
Amnesia. My roommate often has what he calls " 'nope!' moments" when he plays it.
Requiem, a free to play online game that has enough gore for anyone in my book. It has good graphics, audio and dismemberment. Oh, and lots of blood. Hack and slash fantasy galore!
The Silent Hill franchise has always scared the you-know-what out of me. Awesome games with great stories that you can't play with no lights on. (I try at first and then chicken out...)

Is there more evil in society today?I ask because of watching a documentary on TV about Scotland in the 1960's and how parents were confident about letting their kids walk to school on their own, people left their doors open without fear of being attacked or robbed, kids played on the streets...

Guns aside, what do you think contributes to our seeming epidemic of mass shootings in the US?BESIDES the easy access to guns, what else do you think contributes to the high rate of violence and all the mass shootings in our country? Is it feelings of hopelessness? Untreated and mismanaged...
