Apple Cider Vinegar For Diabetes

Updated on February 29, 2012

What Is Diabetes?

Of all of the fabulous uses for apple cider vinegar, you may not be aware of its beneficial qualities for someone with diabetes.

Technically speaking, diabetes is a blood sugar disorder in which glucose remains in your bloodstream rather than being absorbed by the cells of your body. Traditionally, your pancreas is supposed to be responsible for producing insulin that is needed to open the cells up so that they can absorb glucose.

However, if you have diabetes, your pancreas stops producing insulin which causes your blood sugar level to dramatically rise. If left untreated the extra sugar can cause damage to major organs including the heart and kidneys.

Type one diabetes is when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin. Type two is much more common, 95% of diabetics are diagnosed with this type. This is where the pancreas does produce some insulin to get the glucose moving but the cells are resistant and do not open the way that they should to absorb the excess glucose.

Why Apple Cider Vinegar?

Of course, your prescribed medication is your primary defense but apple cider vinegar is an effective help and in some cases a complete alternative. the clear type at your local grocers is not the type to get, as it has no real health benefits. The best benefits come from the organic, unfiltered vinegar that is sold at health food stores.

Apple cider vinegar has been proven to prevent a rise in blood sugar after consuming a meal. The vinegar contains an acetic acid that slows digestion of starches down which are usually transformed quickly into glucose. Therefore, it reduces the glycemic index from starchy type foods.

Additionally, it is shown that consuming apple cider vinegarbefore you go to sleep has quite a favorable impact on the next morning's blood glucose levels. If you have diabetes, apple cider vinegar might be just what you need to help keep your blood sugar levels controlled.

I was having a problem with reflux almost daily. Starting sipping the organic vinager several times a day and have not had reflux since. I mix a tablespoon of it in half a glass of water. Pass the fridge and take a sip.

I personally don't care much for the pills. I did try them once upon a time and just didn't feel anything from them. When I drink the organic ACV, I actually at least feel a burst of energy...the pills...nothing. Perhaps they work as well, I'm just not a fan. :)

I am curious, do you know if the ACV pills are as effective?

I started taking apple cider vinegar a couple of years ago. I have type 1 diabetes, but was taking it to help with another ailment.(heartburn) I did notice that my levels balanced out and I felt better over all.

I took it a few times a day normally before meals. Had to prepare myself though. It did not go down very easy. After reading this page you have convinced me to go back using apple cider vinegar again. Thank you very much.

I actually take ACV several times throughout the day but I don't take it for glucose level..I just take it for all of the other health benefits. My mom takes it for sugar levels though and I believe she just takes a bit mixed with water at every meal.

How often do you take your ACV? I assume this tip is only a compliment to eating healthy meals and exercising?

Isn't it amazing how something so natural and easy can be so beneficial? I used to cringe trying to do shots of ACV and now I just put shots in the last sip of my tea throughout the day and I'm immune to the taste. I'm so glad you are feeling better and that it is working for you! Thanks for reading and commenting.

I have an ongoing Pancreas condition, I am a 44 year old male and I started incorporating ACV into my Diet a week ago. plain old ACV and balsamic vinegar in dressing and such. after years of suffering I am feeling much better over all. Normally I am always starving especially after eating healthier foods and veggies. now I feel much more satisfied and my digestion has improved. I believe ACV can benefit most people on "Proton pump inhibitors" and the like. The Doctors have been trying to get me to take them for years. never seemed like a good Idea to disable part of my digestion process. I always disliked sour and vinegary things, turns out it's what the doctor should have "Ordered" long ago..

Some people say one tablespoon and others say two. However..those that say two are also diluting it in water with honey so that might be why they opt for a bit more. Thanks for reading!!
