Health and Diet go Hand in Hand

Eating a healthy diet is not just having a few days of healthful eating and going back to old eating habits. Eating a healthful diet daily is a commitment to yourself to help ensure good health, feeling good and maintaining a satisfactory weight.

You do not have to deprive yourself of favorite foods, just limit them to an occasional treat. Making wise food choices will create a healthier body and perhaps avoid doctor visits and expensive prescriptions for conditions you may be able to control with healthy eating.

Making Decisions About Food

When you purchase food at the store, go to friends for meals or go to restaurants you can look at it as positive experience, knowing you are going to make wise food choices. Plan ahead what you are going to eat and stick with it. After many years of making decisions ahead of time it is now what I do and really don't even think about it. To stave off hunger take a large glass of tomato juice before going to the market or out to eat. This will help you to resist temptation.

Most restaurants offer healthy and low calorie selections. You can always push the bread basket away. When having dinner at friend's houses and the calorie laden appetizers are brought out. Take a small taste to be courteous. It may surprise you but more than likely no one will watch what you eat, unless you make a big deal about being on a diet. As for dessert you can ask for a small portion of whatever is served and just take a bite or two.

What to Buy at the Grocery Store

It is probably old news that when going to the grocery store to hit the outside isles of stores where the fresh items reside. Get well acquainted with the produce section and plan all the wonderful vegetables dishes you are going to make. Plan your meals for the week and stick with the grocery list. Why not plan two vegetarian meals a week? Eating more vegetarian meals will save you money as well as provide you with many vitamins and minerals for good health. .

Try ground turkey instead of ground beef and stretch it with flax meal or brown rice. You can also add chopped peppers, onions, celery and chopped tomatoes for a healthier meal. Make a marinated salad of raw broccoli, celery, onions, peppers, tomatoes, black olives and olive oil and lemon juice. This will keep in the refrigerator for four days.Buy dry pinto beans, black beans, lentils and brown rice. These are nourishing foods and inexpensive. You can purchase frozen fish if fresh is not available and find many creative ways to cook. Buy raw nuts for snacks. Once you make these changes during your trips to the market you will pat yourself on the back for saving money and improving your health.

Final Words about your Diet

We all have choices about the food we eat and temptation lurks at every corner. Once you say no to an unhealthy food choice, you can feel very self-righteous. This is the first step to improving your eating habits.

  • Never get overly hungry, as there is the temptation to binge on anything that is available. Never eat when you are tired as it is commonplace to reach for something sweet to revive your energy. And in the long run will make you feel more lethargic after eating sugar.
  • Making healthful selections with food has another benefit--you will have more energy than you ever had before.
  • Remember to take small steps to improve your eating habits.
  • Give up some of the bad food you have been eating--one item at a time. Healthy eating is when you eat a healthful diet everyday.
