so, the first question that comes to mind is why will this way be different for me?
This is the beginning of a new path for trying to lose weight. I have got to find a way to lose weight before I choose to go the surgical route. will it work if I track myself? turn it into a project? talk about it daily? see my habits in print? open it up for others to see and respond to? we will see.
Whether you do it in public or not is not going to matter if you are not honest with yourself.
Keep a diet diary, and write EVERYTHING you consume in it. You might be less tempted to cheat when you force yourself to read the diary daily... but at the same time if you are online and posting about it, you may be more likely to cheat yourself in order to please the "mob".
The three most important things for weight loss are: eating healthy, and small meals. Exercising regularly if not daily, and HONESTY to yourself in the effort you make.
