What is a safe age for young men to begin heavy powerlifting?
When you say heavy how heavy is heavy? 85 - 100% max? like 1 - 3 RM?
and when you say young men, how young is young men? Like is ages 7 -10?
Reason I ask is because there is a lot of great research and science journals that test the effects of weight bearing exercises vs bone growth. Also google windows of trainability for some nice reading.
Let's say a young guy of 13-16. Looking to increase muscle size as much as possible...actual bodybuilding, competition grade. I have heard that 22 is the age to safely begin placing extreme loads on the bones, because they don't completely harden until this age. Can bones really be deformed because of this type of bodybuilding too early?
I started when I was 15. I did a lot of local contests but I never competed at the national level. I was also a wrestler and football player so I really did it to enhance my performance in sports. I would not start them earlier than 15 or 16 though. By that age they are well developed.
