What are some real steps to build self esteem as a much older adult?
I know about positive affirmations, but I would like something more.

Depends how old you are and how healthy you are, but I would say that any older family member who has a reputation for listening and giving wise advice when needed, has all the self-esteem one can have; to be respected, loved and appreciated by family is the ultimate praise. In one's own right, I suppose it's getting out and about and keeping up activities as much as possible, interacting with others in lots of areas, because the more social interaction one has, the more feedback one is going to get - hopefully it'll be good feedback and therefore self-confidence follows.
