In an addiction recovery group, do you believe anonymity is becoming obsolete?
Most 12 step groups have tradition of anonymity. When these groups started, addictions carried so much of a stigma, and attendance to these groups could cause public ridicule, loss of jobs, etc. You were considered insane. But now, these are accepted as diseases and are more understood as symptoms of underlying problems. I respect other people's anonymity, however , I'm pretty free about my own. I believe breaking my anonymity is a help for prevention by example. What do you think?
That is a great question. I think that the anonymity is vital, but -- of course -- it is an individual choice and should be respected as such. New people in 12-step groups should feel secure in their own anonymity, but if a person in recovery chooses to disclose his status, he should feel free to.
