    Why does hair turn white?

We know that age increases the risk of white hairs.  But what is the physiological mechanism that cause hair to turn white?

As the body ages, melanin production, as with most other hormones and chemicals in the body, slows and can stop altogether. Melanin is genetically programmed to give the colour to hair and skin, and provides protection in sunlight . As the melanin production slows and stops, the hair colour is no longer provided in the hair cells, meaning that it grows out white or grey.
