What is the leading cause of infant mortality?
What is the leading cause of death among children who are less than one year old?
SIDS. Or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Currently it is thought that the infant just stops breathing. Possibly from congenital defects, but actually they have not found a definite cause. Curious as to your reason for the question....
Thanks Xanzacow. To answer your question, I am just curious to learn more about infant mortality. I am not yet a mother and so I would like to learn as much as possible before that time comes. A friend of mine lost a healthy infant few hours after nursing him. According to CDC, SIDS is associated with half the causes of SUID (Sudden Unexpected Infant Death). It continues to say that "SIDS is the leading cause of death among infants aged 1–12 months, and is the third leading cause overall of infant mortality in the United States (http://www.cdc.gov/SIDS/). That is kind of confusing. I am just curious as to what then are the #1 and 2 overall.
