Waiting at an amusement park vs. a grocery store.
Why are people willing to wait an hour at an amusement park to ride an attraction, but get irritated waiting in line at the grocery store?
I think it's all about expectations, just expect wait at an amusement park and that seems to make it ok.
The wait for a ride is thrilling. The whole time you are building up anxiety and excitement for the thrill of the ride. The wait at the grocery store...not so much. At the end of this wait you get to shovel over loads of money, and then you get to load the car and lug everything into the house and put it up. Good times, huh?
People will do a lot for their kids. Many times their children are dying to ride an attraction at an amusement park, so the parents will wait hours to please their kids. Getting groceries on the other hand is just another daily chore, one of the more annoying and expensive ones for that matter.
This is a very good question. I would agree that nervous anticipation or excitement plays a role. At the grocery store people tend to be there as part of various errands that need to be completed and the person is thinking about time crunches and so forth. They typically don't have something fun or exciting to look forward to immediately.
Some people are very very impatient and rude . I had a lady on Sunday who said " I don't have time to be here in a queue" in a very rude tone when I asked her how she was - I really wanted to ask why she came to the supermarket at a busy time but held off. I have a hub about Grocery shopping etiquette as I have met loads of rude customers but fortunatly a lot of nice ones as well.
Once while waiting for my people to ride a roller coaster I figured out that the ride called the Drop Zone only lasted 6 seconds. From the time it started to when it finished was only 6 seconds.. I figured I could do just about anything for 6 seconds. Nobody believed me when I said "O.K. lets go on the Drop Zone". They thought I was kidding. The roller coaster riding brave people were afraid of the Drop Zone .There wasn't much of a line and so we got on. When I started up I began saying 100,000, 200,000 etc. At 400,000 I was about to swoon when I reminded myself I could last another 2 seconds. After the fright of the ride and realizing it took longer to get strapped into the seat than the ride, I decided the grocery line was a better deal. I don't have to leave the ground and it doesn't takes as long as the amusement park ride.
I do have and 81 year old friend who I go to the amusement park with. He rides the roller coasters with my kids and I sit and watch people.
Great question, I think it is because with the amusement park you have something to wait for whereas at a grocery store you are basically waiting to leave!

Let's face it - a lot of us hate those long lines in amusement theme parks! Those in the bathrooms, counter-service restaurants, and, of course, the rides tick us off!Speaking of which, I have dedicated this forum post to your experiences in your favorite parks during times of high crowds. As long...

Another grocery store tale: At the grocery store (in the evening) there was a man and a woman shopping together and I immediately got a bad feeling when they passed me. They walked around the store and didn't seem to be buying anything. Then when I went to the till, they were suddenly behind me....
