Why do hugs feel so good?

I know it's an emotional thing that makes us feel safe, comforted and loved, but is there a possible scientific explanation?

i don't know about scientific but hugs from kids and parents are the warmest. I love the way my kids squeeze me tight when they hug. That is REAL hug

Oh, me too! My 11 yr old stepdaughter clings to me like she'll never see me again. It's the best feeling ever! Completely unexpressible with words.

Hugs makes one feel good because  of the secured emotions humans feel the need to have from those great hugs like  letting the other know you are there and it makes one feel relieved with great sighs to know when yo feel at your worst a hug can take away that bad moment. The closeness of another makes one   feel relaxed.

Hi, DDE! I can definitely agree with you on this. I know, myself, when all the world seems to be against me the only place I feel safe and content is in my fiance's arms.

They feel good because of the chemical release in the brain: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_intimacy

      Hello, Anti-Valentine,
I believe you're referring to endorphins. Didn't think of it that way. I like the name, btw.

Well, in summer, the Sun makes us feel good also, and for some, ice cream or chocolate does the trick.
Your natural state is a happy and blissful one, and the whole of your earthy sojourn is to re-discover this basic Truth. And so we search through alcohol, jobs, family, friends, nice cars ...and eventually either walk away from them or accept with resignation.
Hugging makes us feel good and in an unconscious way, reminds us of our true Source which is Happiness. The better question is to ask yourself what's going on inside at such times, and trace its source.

I have to agree with you. I consider myself as a student of life. My personal goal, once I am able to get back on my feet financially, is to live my life as as closely to nature as I can; with a few modern luxuries, of course. I know what ya mean.

All people need human touch. THat is why solitary confinement eats away at the prison population.

True. But I'm perfectly happy alone. I think if I was in prison, solitary confinement would be right up my alley! They'd be doing me favor sticking me in there. tongue

I have worked in a prison for 17 years, history proves differently. It's great for awhile but being caged for years at a time in a place the size of a closest can destroy a human.I do not speak of where i work but of a family member incarcerated

I'm sorry and I understand. However, I'm not exactly normal when it comes to being alone tho. I prefer it! And I promise you, for me, it would be better than to be put in with the general population. But I know what you mean.
