To those who had the intelligence & potential to succeed but did not, what would you want to say to
Oh boy, Grace. You just created one of the most exciting, stimulating questions I've ever seen on hubpages. You know my propensity toward overly-long answers, so I won't do that here because I think you've provoked a topic that I want to address, and would encourage/challenge everyone to address in a "Dear Mom and Dad" hub article. My parents are gone now, so it's very safe to write about this question. I would say that that is the only time an open letter of this type might NOT be hurtful. I loved my parents dearly. To sum up the article that's bouncing around in my head right now: I would say,
Dear Mom and Dad,
I loved and admired you dearly. But, with my arms around you in loving openness, I want to ask you now, now that you're gone:
Why did you remain so content? Why, daddy, were you ok, given the "Rich Man, Poor Man" choices, did you choose the poor man mentality - a mentality I try to overcome? Why didn't you realize that you didn't have to stay in your station in life? Why didn't you ask Uncle Bob about investing and finances and learn from him? Why didn't you show me by your actions the spirit of Maya Angelo, " ...and still I rise." You were both exceptionally talented people who let life hold you down with its heavy foot. And at 65, Dad, you ended up incredibily, Irretrievably sad because, among other disappointments in life, you didn't even have enough money to buy wood for a project you had in mind or have a workshop that would have kept you happy. Instead, you ended up dying in a Veteran's Hospital after years of electric shock therapy treatments. Why didn't you and mom realize the great potential each of you had - a potential for the happiness I never saw you experience?
