What are your low sodium tips for someone starting low sodium diet?

My husband has blood pressure which has gotten up to a moderate to high level. He eats tons of sodium and is attempting to start a low sodium diet. The problem is we are both use to southern (USA) type foods. All of them seem to be filled with sodium(and fried). He is cutting out packaged foods, but what else can he do to still eat better than a rabbit and have low sodium or just lower blood pressure. By the way he has almost no stress in his life these days so that is not contributing factor.
