Please read these interesting insights from Gianella.

I agree that the disability logo does not really represent many people who have invisible disabilities, Gianella, but I guess they need to use something as a symbol. Do you have any suggestion of what they could use instead? Maybe they need more than one.

In many cases it doesn't represent those with physical disabilities either. I see no real reason for change though. From what I have seen in the past 30 years living with a disability, everyone knows the current symbol, and most let them be used for what they were designed.

Thirty years ago I remember many time taking up between 2 and 4 parking spaces because people had no respect for those who needed handicapped parking spots. Now for the most part they are always full. If I still required a lift I would most of the time I would still be taking up extra parking spaces.

Most of the places I frequented for business made me leave my service dog outside as well. Due to this I had to be dependent upon others which wasn't right then and isn't right now.

Believe me, I didn't share very much about my experiences and didn't about the love of my life who was wheelchair dependent from 1957, due to polio, until her death in 1999. In my case I became wheelchair dependent when I was married to the love of my life. My wife and I were separated because state workers deemed my home environment not a "safe" place to have my needs met.  There are major differences when a person becomes disabled as a child, and as an adult. The adjustment period is much longer for adults. This in many cases can cause both a physical and mental diagnoses.

As for the disability logo, again I believe what we have works. This I will take back to the "it is all but impossible to teach and old dog new tricks" It would take a while for people to pick up on anything new used as the logo.

Thank you for sharing my article John. I have no intention of asking for the logo to be changed but I just happen to just ponder on them a bit last night. There are some alternative PWD logos online that depicts other disabilities that are used in some other public places. I guess this logo is a sign for people to be aware that people will use the alotted space for those handicapped and one who uses wheelchair and for others not to be confused by who can use the space or area. Just like the parking spaces and the comfort rooms.

Though there are still some concerns and problems that needs to be improved like the ones I mentioned in this article to make things quite easier and give a better quality of life to the PWD community. As they also make a huge number in our total population around the world. We should atleast see the situation they are currently in. Most cases the transportation, dining experiences, health care services, some are just not that PWD friendly yet and we have to put into consideration that we must also accomodate them, have something that's designed for them for their utmost comfortability to live just like how others would.

It's pretty much distorted in this article as like what I placed here above my article, this is one of those articles where "Scratching the itch of curiosity to find reasons beyond the things I start to question and wonder more, and learn from realizations." Same with the "Valentine's Day Blues" article too.

Like a blog of some sort, I just type the thoughts that come through my head, answer the questions I have in mind, and learn from my realizations as I end the article. Usually something I do before I fell asleep at night especially if insomnia kicks in.

I'm glad you find it interesting and thank you for sharing this one John!

Thank you for sharing your experiences and thoughts wheelinallover. It's nice to learn something from you. I really appreciate it.

God bless you both John and wheel.

    Stay safe.

It has been raining all day, a sleepy head on a bed weather.

Not all disabilities can easily be seen, and of that, I think we all agree.  As to signage, it would be hard to make one for every type of disability. A general one that everyone recognizes is OK with me.  Thanks Gianella and John.

Gianella, you have written a thought-provoking and interesting article. It's very thoughtful of you to bring up so many issues that we usually overlook. I agree that not all disabilities are visible, and we should always take care of people who have disabilities. However, I believe that using one symbol of disability is okay to use as use of more different kind of symbols can create confusion for some people. Maybe the government and private organizations can provide some additional facilities for disabled people, such as more parking spaces, a special pass for disable people, etc.  smile

John, thank you so much for sharing the link to her article

    Blessings to both of you!!
