Joining an Empath Community

Updated on February 28, 2013

I know I´m an empath... now what?

The natural next step after finding out you are an empath is to connect. Empaths are usually lonely wolves, not exactly by choice, but to avoid the emotional overload.

There are three communities dedicated to empaths, that I know of. On this lens I´m going to go over pros and contraries of the three.

Please note: I own one. I will try to be as fair as possible under the circumstances nonetheless.

There are also other types of communities that have sections or groups for empaths. I also provide a list of them, but can´t go further as I haven´t been around them yet.

At a glance... - The three main empath communities

empath community
empath community

Elise Lebeau´s Community

It is the biggest and the oldest Empath community.

It´s population is over 10,000 members right now and growing.

It has many strong empaths, the main forum dedicates mainly to people very new to the gifts and coping.

Empath Zone Community

It is the new kid on the block, but not so new by now.

The population is around 700 members.

It gathers spiritual people exploring empathy as a gift.

Empath Chat Community

It is the second one created.

The population is around 700 members.

It gathers a good mix of personalities, interesting conversations and support.

When empaths gather...

Goodies and problems you might find

The goodies

You are in a place where you are normal for a change.

If interested in learning, the growing process skyrockets.

Real communication.

Emotional support.

The problems

Risk of emotional overload.

Those places attract some parasites, psy-vamps and unbalanced people.

Remember

Sensitivity goes both ways!

Leave Ego and fight or flight reactions on the doorstep.

Ask for help, and you will see miracles happening.

Communities´ personalities

The three communities I mentioned have distinctive personalities and do their best to increase the gooddies and compensate the problems on their own particular way. They are also careful with monetization.

Elise Lebeau´s Community

Personality

EC has changed greatly for the better since the first time I wrote this. I asked the moderators to give me their version as I did with Tammie; they still are working on it, so I did a small update meantime. Two thumbs up for those ladies who managed to get a grip and steer the community back to its initial aim.

The community has a maternal style. It targets empaths who are new to the gifts (or its awareness) and still trying to cope with them. There are some developed empaths, and very talented people who volunteer to help others.

Goodies

They have starting documentation (Empath survival program) and EFT videos.

They provide emotional support for people in distress.

Problem solving

They discourage religious/spiritual talk in the main forum.

They prohibit mentions to parasites, psy-vamps, and attacks in the main forum.

They encourage people with strong opinions to leave.

They have a strong set of moderators.

You will get into Trouble if

You have a strong emotional presence.

You talk too much about your personal beliefs.

And of course...

if you spam, get into fights too often or show a disruptive behavior.

Monetization

Paid courses

Intuitive consultation

Gift shop

Empath Zone Community

Personality

It gathers people who walk the spiritual path, there are many developed empaths and light workers. The system is horizontal in the sense that there are no leaders, each person is assumed to have the potential to be the biggest authority in something, and the search of that uniqueness is encouraged. From the same perspective, philosophical, and religious plurality is accepted and respected (as long as they are under the light). Everyone add their own gifts to help others in their own development.

Goodies

They have starting documentation (Empath Basics, Second Edition (Empath Zone Library)

).

There are different groups actively developed for self awareness (Empath games, Meditation room, etc)

The community is very active from the growing encouragement perspective.

Problem solving

Encourage people to enter the site in the right mindset (library or garden)

Discourage advertising

Discourage activities leading to vertical systems (leader/follower type of relationships)

Encourage respect for plurality in terms of ideas and beliefs

They have a strong set of moderators

You will get into Trouble if

You whine or vent too much, not looking for a solution (just to release stress).

You are an emotional parasite of any type.

You are using the community as platform for a business (advertising, whether it is spelled out or hidden).

And of course...

if you spam, get into fights too often or show a disruptive behavior.

Monetization

First Store for Empaths

Empath Basics, Second Edition (Empath Zone Library) (You can still find the first edition for free within the community and in scribd).

Empath Chat

I asked Tammie, Empath Chat owner, for help. These are her words

Personality

Bold for an empath community. We are not as fluffy as most empath sites. We take a very realistic view of empathy, for day to day issues, to survival type skills. The only rule on the site is that you have no right to tell another what faith or path they should walk. Because of this we have a lovely blend of people that respect each others views.

Goodies

Information on nonconventional empath skills. Most use the site as a step up site, we have very few newbies. We help each other learn and grow, sharing and trading what we have learned. There is an online store available to everyone.

Problem solving

Because of the free thinking on the site, problems are almost tackled till a solution is found. There is nothing over looked. There are brilliant folks that are very helpful.

Trouble? : lol

Its hard to get into trouble, all we ask is for honesty. Unkindness is dealt with on an individual basis.

Monetization

Community marketplace.

Training Book from Empath Zone Community

Empath Basics, Second Edition (Empath Zone Library Book 1)
Empath Basics, Second Edition (Empath Zone Library Book 1)

This book talks about the main energy kung fu techniques empaths need to have a happy life:

Shielding: strengthening your aura. A strong aura can break apart undesirable external energies, before they get to your perception areas.

Flushing: moving energy along the chakras from Sky toward Earth. Here you put your own names, depending on your main spiritual beliefs. It is a yin / yang movement.

Grounding: moving energy along the chakras from Earth toward Sky. It is a yang / yin movement.

Balancing: attaining the best possible energy state for your situation.

Cleaning the chakras: to move energy through the meridians, they need to be clean. The chakras are the main pumps along the way; make friends with the concept and keep them clean.

Cutting cords: cords are created every time we emotionally interact with someone. They can become draining points.

Stopping psy-vamp attacks: people have the bad habit of stealing energy from others, instead of creating their own or gathering it from the environment. And we are usually easy targets.

Thank you kindly for this helpful article :) About 5 or 6 yrs ago when I first became aware of being an Empath I looked online for support. The first place I found was Elise's site. Not trying to be a negative Nelly but my experience there really turned me off. After reading your article I can say that I am glad that site has changed and even more pleased to hear about the other two which I will be sure to try. Namaste

@empathzone: I don't recommend EC. I had a really bad experience there. I was and still am dealing with a severe psychic attack from a psy vamp I ran into and I didn't realize I was vulnerable because I'm an empath. No one taught me any skills but the minute I asked questions there, they made me feel like I was wrong for bringing up something scary when I realized through my own lesson that we are vulnerable since we are empaths.

I felt like I should share, eventually was banned. I'd never been banned from any forum. I realize that pretty much if you don't believe what they believe (happiness and rainbows...) you are banned if you try to help others prevent serious issues. I did meet 10 plus other women who went through very similar experiences and are empaths and eventually got help from a lady who practices utilizing various white magic and other old things I had no idea existed. Anyhow, my point and like others here who post about EC being a bit toxic, it is.

I know we are emotionally vulnerable being the way we are, but there's a difference between protection and totalitarianism.

@anonymous: I´m sorry you had a bad experience. When a community does not accommodate your needs and you feel you can do it better, it is a clear sign of moving on and creating your own. That is what I did, you will feel better after you do.

Each community has its personality. It is a private house that opens the door to you, but it is still a private house. As guests we never have to forget that.

I had never been banned from any community so far, but I did have my hard encounters with the bunch of hyenas that was running EC a couple of years ago. Those were dangerous people.

Now EC is clean and the new set of moderators are awesome. They are still being attacked from time to time, and they might over-react in some occasions, but in most cases they are right on target.

About Tammie, I don´t know. I never had a single issue with her.

And for myself... my rules are clear: the community has library energy, keep the voice down, learn and teach, respect others and don´t try to sell anything.

Beware of "empath" communites and their intentions, Been there. Elise LeBeau is a business women using the title "Professional Intuitive" and charges vulnerable people money for her "Intuit Sessions," Her true motives are obvious on her website. I don't know why the word empath is just a word. No special powers, just highly sensitive, intuitive people, And some appear to be delusional and in need of more than just a crystal or "shielding." Hate to burst anyone's bubble but but beware.

@anonymous: Elise is not running any empath community at this point. She did promoted her service from the community, but I never saw her pushing it actively.

My community is completely non profit, and in some occasions it worked against new members. Some arrive needing desperately help and don´t have time to make friends; those only can have their needs met with people who lend an ear as a profession. It is sad, but in the times we live, nobody has the time to be everyone´s best friend for free.

Be careful on what communities you do search, many are what U refer to as lesser empaths and truly have not achieved true knowledge. By not following what their limitted knowledge of what an empath truly is they will ban you and put you on a watch list. It is truly a shame to be honest because there are so

many out there stumbling in the dark and are in danger of being corrupted.

@anonymous: Everybody is empathic, it comes with the human "suit". What sets the difference is the awareness that some feelings you are feeling are not yours, not a big deal. Once you are able to feel apart your own mess from others, then it becomes natural to try to get a grip of it.

An empath community is not a private club thing to look at others down, more of a quilt or crochet club if you want. I am doing my crochet, and you are doing yours.. can I learn from you and you learn from me?

Thanks for coming by. And I loved that recipe!!

Thanks for sharing your insights. This is indeed a very interesting topic. I would consider myself to be empathic but not necessarily an empath :-)

I like to thrive within the global community and don't want to separate myself from the other "not-so-empathic" people.

      @anonymous: Hi Elle,

The vent group in EC is feeding ground for psy vamps, this is why the negativity is fed that way, and that is why there are so many trolls. They are there with the straws following the conversations. I only got into there once, not good.

No empath should go there. It is a dangerous neighborhood. i counted 17 vamps in one attack the only time I dared to start a thread there, thanks goodness I was not a newbie. After that, I ended up creating our lil garden.

Besides that, EC has some developed empaths who have done their home there. I respect a lot some of them; Deirdre for example, awesome artist. But as I wrote in the review, it is a place more oriented toward coping than growing.

In EZ, we care about the energy of the place more than anything else. I get really bitchy when someone comes to break it without a very good reason. This is why we don´t have a vent group, we are not there to vent, but to grow and learn, each one in his or her own way. If someone has a problem, we talk about it. But we don´t encourage whining or creating conflict for the sake of it.

About the navigation, it is a choice. It is setup to appear chronologically, so it copies the comment you are answering to. Sometimes it gets long, but you don´t miss bits of the conversation, and everything gets recorded so to speak, you delete a comment and it is still there, in the answer they gave to it.

ECHAT... the vent group there serves the purpose it should in EC. I don´t get in it either, but it is safe.

Having explored all three of these empath communities some of them are more committed than others. The Empath Community being the oldest with the most members is the main and most busy one. The set up for the discussions is the best online allowing members to jump in anywhere on the thread without recopying an above response. This allows the conversations to flow smoothly, the sight is one of the best to navigate and the set up is one of the best on the web. Sadly the Empath Community prefers to control their members and the Admin is dishonest and in tight with the owner, so a certain few are 'allowed' to break guidelines and others are punished when they do. They have a weak Admin/Mod and have an attitude of encouraging trolling. Obvious trolls are allowed to disrupt the community at anytime they choose. Causing hurt and pain to the very members they mandate to provide a 'sensitive' and 'safe' place for. By offering a 'Vent' area instead of eliminating troublemakers who find the site and what other members post to their disliking they allow them to go to vents where innocent members are called out and belittled. The majority of new members to the Empath Community are not interested in 'Empath' per say, but often are attracted to the drama of the Vents Group where they can feed their negative energy and belittle, slam, hurt, bully and destroy legitimate members. Members are also aloud to use the Vents for personal life issues encouraging the wallowing of negative behavior instead of healthy conflict resolution. The site is becoming known now as a place for trolls to gain free access. Venting is encouraged instead of resolution, which has only lead to it becoming a site that is 'negative', in many forms.

However, there are many good, kind, members who do not frequent the vents and are there to really work on their empathy and help others. Growth in members at EC is permitted as long as it fits into the owner/admin ideal of what growth is. Should someone have a different view or want to share their journey they are often condemned and made to feel bad for growing.

My advice to anyone looking to expand and find help, growth and control of their empathy is to avoid EC at all costs, it maybe one of the busiest but it is one of the most unhealthy places for empaths to learn.

*EMPATH ZONE: I highly recommmend as it doesn't have a Venting Group which says a lot about it creating a 'safe', 'sensitve' environment for those seeking to really learn. The discussions are hard to follow though and will take time to get used to. They also are not afraid to allow 'spirituality' to be discussed which is often strongly linked to empathy.

*EMPATH CHAT: Also a nice community but does have a 'Venting' group, however it is not over busy and doesn't seem to allow the slamming, belittling or trolling so famous at the EC. The discussion forum is set up like Empath Zone, so doesn't have the natural flow of EC but for those seeking a positive experience in time it can be navigated in understanding. It also has two chats and weekly discussions. Individualism is encouraged.

@empathzone: Taking donations and/or bartering is another good way to exchange services. I have bartered a few times and it was a wonderful.

Balance, wow.. that can be a rocky one, BUT what a wonderful learning experience (smiles). Many years ago when the whole concept of getting paid for something spiritual came to my attention, I remember writing a lot about it. It was back then that I realized each of us, need to do what is best for us. I fully believe trouble can set in when someone puts the $$ before anything else.

Yep, communication is done on many levels and once you think you have it figured out, you advance to even a different level where you learn even more. Gotta love Spiritual Growth!! (smiles)

I enjoy your pages, keep up the great work!

When I learned that there was a name to the feelings that I have felt all my life, empath, I felt a great peace come over me. It was like I found a significant piece to the puzzle which put ME together. It helped me make sense of the emotions that I feel from other people. I was very comforted to know that I was not alone. Empath Zone is a great community. It has helped me a lot and the people are wonderful. It is a great place to learn and understand this remarkable gift of empathy.

      @WhiteOak50: Hi Eva,

thanks so much for taking the time to go over this. It is a toughy. :)

What people mostly agrees in our community is in taking donations after the job is done, as there are no guarantees.

But the middle ground where the spiritual realm meets the physical realm is difficult to discern.

Takes us again to that lil word: balance. :)

Thanks for taking the time to come here. The communication, as you know, takes place in many levels... non sensitives will miss a good deal if the fun only reading. :D

Hi Laura and welcome to Squidoo. I was reading your comment on my Susan Norgren page and I wanted to drop by and respond to it, if I may? All of my years being involved with the "psychic" world including healing abilities, I have battled with the fact of "charging" for my services. Unfortunately, I still battle with it, but have found somewhat of a middle ground that works for me.

By listening to my Higher Guides, I have found that if someone comes along that needs help, I am supposed to guide that person in anyway I can. To this date, (15-20 years later) I have never charged anyone for a Reiki Healing Session, but have given many. I do read Native American Cards, and only recently felt it was okay to start charging a small fee, but continue to do readings for those who need one and cannot afford them.

So in short, I can honestly say I follow my heart completely when it comes to charging or not charging for any services I can offer. I do this regardless of what anyone thinks or believes because in the end like I have said many times, we basically walk our path alone. I feel if the Divine has given me these "gifts" than it is up to me to make sure I can help where I can. Does this make sense?

I hope this helps in response to your comment. Have a Blessed New Year!!
