Depending on the age, they can if you teach them the real meaning. But, then you have to ask them questions after teaching and have them apply what they have learned. First and foremost, you should evaluate whether or not you know and truly understand and believe in the real meaning yourself.
I don't think the majority of ADULTS understand or really care about the meaning of the holidays they celebrate. Presents, excuses for getting drunk, and paid time off of work are thought of more frequntly than the real reason of the holiday. New Years- Get drunk, shoot fireworks, get paid time off Easter - Eat lots of good food, paid time off Forth of July - Get drunk and shoot fireworks Thanksgiving - paid time off Christmas - Blow tons of money on presents and paid time off
Children learn from what they see. It's doubtful they see past what their parents do.
