Poem - The Outsider
The Outsider
When they let go of the racism
from their hearts,
then let them preach.
Before you start to be a teacher,
it is yourself that you must first teach.
They can bring tears to my eyes,
but they cannot make me weep.
I have survived so much,
I have climbed mountains and swam
across oceans a thousand feet deep.
Only I have the right
to make me cry or not.
I cannot be stopped
by deception or threats,
or even lies or a gunshot.
You cannot divide my heart
into four quadrants,
and expect me to survive.
They will not trust me but still,
I know what I must somehow decide.
Even in the hardest rain,
over the clouds
is how the eagles fly.
They are not easily dispirited,
that is why they are kings of the sky.
Let them continue to live,
in their small worlds of big lies.
Because I will live
and that is what I will do,
because I was born to rule the skies.
