Water-colored Memories
Reality or Imaginary...
Poetry like love can take on the persona of real people or can be just a lively imagination recalling water-colored memories. Some of the poems I write are about people that I encounter, other poems are nothing but pure fantasy, while others are a well blended combination of both. This blended mix creates mystery about my true characters plus it allows an individual to separate reality from fantasy as they so choose. Of course life is already too complicated to use real names so names are strictly a part of the creativity. My intent is to provoke the reader to recall a memory that they’ve either experienced or would love to encounter. I love poetry as much as I love to provoke thoughts; for this reason don't form any preconceived notions that my poems are of my life only...For that my friend is not necessary to enjoy the ride. Imagination is the key!
Love Transcends Time
“The Way We Were” is a 1973 romantic drama movie that got several awards and the soundtrack recording was on the charts for 23weeks. However, I was just a kid growing up on the farm so I did not see this movie until many years later. Barbra Streisand’s song “The Way We Were” has a line of lyrics that goes, “Misty water-colored memories.” I’m sure that my being a fan of hers in both music and film some how transcended time and caused my subconscious to hold on to the thoughts of water-colored memories. And those thoughts became a poem some years later as apart of another love story. Since I don’t believe in coincidence, this must be how it happened and it’s only fitting that now over a decade later, both the poem and the song wind-up together here within HubPages.

Water-colored Memories
James, when you were here,
you said with a doubtful cheer
to write a poem about you,
Well here it is, just for you.
I’m writing in water-colored memories.
I hope you will read it and be pleased.
As I’m sure that you know,
water-colored memories can come and go.
They are memories that can be changed;
their structure can be rearranged.
But why change water-colored memories
that are as pleasant as these….
*****
You came on a weekend that my stars said romance.
I knew before you came that I didn’t stand a chance.
I could not fight off the stars and you.
There was no way I wouldn’t like you.
The first night went as the stars planned.
I had to abide by their every command.
Now, you and I share water-colored memories
of that night, and of future reveries.
The next day’s ventures, I blame them on you.
You’re the one that suggested the rendezvous:
the languorous walk in the park,
the devilish love-making in the dark.
As the sun began to rise, we both realized,
that we had to say our good-byes.
That day was a sad one,
because our friendship had only begun…
*****
Now years later, we both know that we have to find
a memorable secret place, a lingering time
to make more water-colored memories
that perhaps will be better than these.
But for now, all corners of my mind
are filled with thoughts of the time.
The time that you, James, filled my mind
with a weekend of water-colored memories.
Water-colored memories of you and me.
