What I love about poetry is that it can tell a complete story in just a few lines.  It is amazing to be able to receive a full story in a few short stanzas and walk away shaking your head, or wiping your eyes.

Poetry and being a poet is so subjective it is hard to answer what it means to become a poet.  If a person loves the genre, puts down on paper what it is they want to convey, rereads it and feels their story is there in front of them - then I would say they are poets.

Being a poet, for me, is not about recognition from others but rather recognition in your own eyes that you have accomplished what you have set out to do; relay a story, or a piece of a story that moves the reader--even if the writer is the only reader that poem ever has.

Last month I created a Hub solely from the point of view of poets and what they thought poetry and poets were:

I agree ... with all of them! :~)

My daddy being a famous Latvian poet and writer I was surrounded by the poetic word since I was a baby on up. He even bought be a book with children's best loved poem which I still have today. All of my parents friends were poets and writers so all of this creativity rubbed off. When I actually realized I as in love with poetry was when I was but five. I came home and told my dad I had to write my very first Valentine's Day poem. Dad showed me how and I remember it like it was yesterday.

    Be mine, be mine
    Says Valentine
    But I answer to him
    I like better Jim

The romance with poetry was on. I even have poems I wrote in Latvian but not too many. Poetry is part of me and part of my heart and soul.
