How do you write, when your world is filled with noise?
I suffer from ADHD, and noise easily distracts my train of thought. It prevents me from reading, writing, or focusing on anything, which is truly a pain. So how do you block the world off, and focus directly upon your writing?
It can be very difficult. I would suggest noise canceling headphones that will block out noise....unless you have children that need you. When my kids were small, I waited until they went to bed then had a few hours to myself in the quiet while my husband watched TV.
Also if you have an iPad with Dragon speak ( free download for iPad), you can "write" while you go for a drive. I have plotted many stories while I drive...talking right out loud--I hope no one thought I was nuts....but oh well.
I don't know if this will work but my gut says you should write about the noise. Maybe if you embrace the distractions and name them, you can take some of the power away from those distractions. Alternate between writing about the distractions and writing about something else.
Thank you janshares for your answer, and I truly appreciate your reply. I think I will try this for awhile, until I can afford the headphones that duffsmom had suggested. Thank you.
Honestly, I can't write without some sort of "noise." I find myself doing my best writing when I'm listening to music.
I'm not sure if you'd have the same tastes, but I listen to music that makes "noise" into songs (genres like glitch, idm, electronic for example) and music without words. It helps to dull noise and silence around me.
I live in a one room apartment with my boyfriend, we both work form home. He is a scrapper, which means tons of noise, and the only music that helps, is heavy rock, which keeps my neighbors from knowing that he is working, but keeps me from writing.
I also struggle with distractions and I can't write with music on because I find that the lyrics mess with my word flow. (Though music without lyrics might work better). But, I think in general, I get past it by setting small goals for myself. For example, a very simple word or page count that I need to reach before I can be done. By setting the goal small enough, I can often get it finished in the gaps between distractions. Sometimes it leads to much longer writing sessions, and sometimes it doesn't. But if you're always accomplishing the goal, you can always feel like you're making progress.
Learn to control it. Takes a lot of practice but it is possible. Try having a louder inner voice than the noise. Focus, attention;, they can be controlled.

Personally when i write i use a little of both things i have been through in the past as well as thoughts that pass through my mind. I find that this makes for an interesting and intense novel for readers; However lately i've been hearing that the key to a fantastic novel is only writing about the...

What is your definition of a good writer?
by Karen Wilton 13 years ago
Writing has always been my way of talking when no-one is listening so finding HubPages is as good as picking up the phone and knowing there is someone on the other end of the line.My problem is that I have so much to write about I don't know what my niche is or if I even want one. What do you think...

Do you write out of your passions or as a response to what's in demand?

I write 5 hubs a day. 2 of them are quality hubs that I enjoy writing and put my most effort to, the rest are there to share some kind of information I think is interesting. But these are not as good and I actually struggle to write them. So how many of your hubs are you satisfied with?

Hi everyone,Just a question that I am hoping some of you will answer. I have seen SO many excellent hubs here on HP and find myself asking the following question ... do these folks do it for the money or because they love to write?!!I think I know the answer to this but want to ask anyway. Love...
