Does one have to follow a structured style when one is starting out or is it better to freestyle?
If swimming, I'd say start with a structured style. If doing a martial art, I'd say start with one style, then learn another, and mix the best points of every style you know. If writing poetry, I'd say learn about the structured styles, and maybe even try writing in them as an exercise, but if you have to hit your poem with a sledgehammer to get it to fit into the sonnet style, for example, go ahead and free-verse it.
As for me, I like writing limericks.
