Definitely with a small 'l' I can't stand all that stuff where the author is so terrified of any element of plot leaking in he tells the story in the first par so you are then free to enjoy his terribly intense, erudite language.
Give me plot and story with plenty of action, I don't give a monkeys about coming of age, or the story of how the character changes, I'm interested in the what of a story, not the who. Although the characters have to be believable, I don't want cardboard cut-outs.
I read mostly nonfiction.
I used to like Stephan King but ever since the car accident the guy is even more long-winded and the Dark Tower series was a total turnoff..
Funniest book on my desk right now;
"Bleachy-Haired Honky Bitch" by Hollis Gillespie, which is not as funny as her "Tales from a Recovering Slut" - now THAT book was so Fruegun FunnY!!!!! Made me laugh out loud a bunch of times.
