Preferably geared to a more adult audience than for kids.

The Guardians of Gahoole is a pretty good book with talking owls as the main characters. These books were made into a movie not long ago.

I read the Chronicals of Narnia by C.S. Lewis as an adult, and found it comparable. In fact I liked it more. There are like seven books in the series and they are awsome!

For strictly adults, I read The Pillars of the Earth and World Without End, by Ken Follet in the same time period and although they are not mystical or fantasy driven they are enjoyable and long if your looking for a journey.
