Is Heathcliffe evil or just a wretched soul?
In Wuthering Heights the portrayal of Heathcliffe is complex and controversial. How do you read him?
Heath cliff was taken in while he was an orphan by the family and treated like one of them. He was brought up equal to the family and not considered any different till the day Katherine spurned his love. Not knowing his background but knowing how he was taught to live, we cannot call him evil but rather blinded by the obsessive love he felt for Katherine that caused him to be flawed in all the choices and decisions he makes.
Heathcliff was damaged, not evil, and had to suffer a miserable existence for most of his life. Definitely a victim of circumstance, but also not a fellow you'd want in your life. A wretched soul, indeed.
No, he's definitely not evil. I think he comes across that way as a defence mechanism. It's his way of coping with the issues that he has to confront (especially when it comes to Katherine.)
