How do I know if I possess the proper skills to become a freelance writer?
Just try it out and see how it goes. If you enjoy doing it and you have some pretty good content, then you're good to go. It doesn't even need to be professional quality. If you enjoy doing it and use spell check each time, then have fun.
The simple fact that you've used '"if I possess'" instead of "if I've got", is a giant clue to me.
I agree with jtyler, that you should "just try it out and see how it goes". But, I disagree with his point that "It doesn't even need to be professional quality.
It certainly does, if you expect to earn real money - I assume you're talking about freelance writing as a career. That's the kicker.
These days, when anyone with a computer and an ego can be an 'online writer', just by saying so, (in their deams...) the whole field has become sullied and debased. Nevertheless, for good, ie; professional standard, writers, opportunities abound.
NOT wishing to promote myself, or sound like a smartass, but I've written a number of Hubs on the topic, that may be of interest, perhaps even of value, to you.
If you click on my profile, you can decide for yourself.
Good luck with your dream.
