How do you become a freelance writer for a local magazine?

I would really like to write for some of the local magazines in my community.  How should I approach this goal? What are the steps that need to be taken?

Since I was in this position many years ago..and might I add a lot more daring. Find the email address of the managing editor.  Send ideas you may have and topics you wish to write about.  Most city papers like to write about the city.  Have links with your writing samples...and follow up with a phone call GOod Luck.

Great advice!  I've read it can take several submissions to even get a resonse, so I need to get to work.

First, you need to make sure they're accepting freelance submissions. If they have a web page, it should be on there somewhere.

Next, I'd follow Carol's advice if they're accepting submissions, but don't have guidelines clearly stated. It's pretty much all about the pitch, from what I've read and heard from other freelancers.

The Writers Market has a lot of great info about breaking into that field, plus a huge listing of potential publishers, magazines and yearly contests.

Thanks ESPeck.  There was an ad in a local magazine that I read often, asking for Freelance Writers, so that is what prompted my interest initially.  I've already applied, but need to follow up.  I have a copy of Writer's Market -I need to get active
