Are you really satisfied with romantic novels that have happy endings?

I caught myself thinking about this the other day as I was devising a romantic story in my head. I created these characters over 8 years ago, and after all this time I figured it out. To make the story great-- kill one of them. I find that happy endings don't really do it for me. They're unrealistic. I like tragedy. It surfaces much more emotion to the characters.

I actually don't like it when things don't end on a good note! It gets me so mad when it doesn't end the way I want it too:( There are some stories though that I do like for there to be a change in pace. I agree some happy endings are unrealistic but they do make me feel happy knowing that it ended in a sweet way:)

I read fiction to escape reality.  No life does not necessarily end happily but I want my books to end happily.  If I want reality I'll relive my childhood or read the news.  I love the escapism of romantic novels (but not graphic sex scenes).

Personally, I don't want to read or watch a romantic story that doesn't have a happy ending.  Life's often tragic enough as it is, no need for my fiction to do the same.  Though of course, there are exceptions like PS I Love You  Not to mention that even though happily ever afters rarely exist in real life, they do happen.  I prefer to be more optimistic about my chances wink

    Dear Miss Annabella,

I guess it depends on the person. Me personally, I like the happy endings I hate when it ends in tragedy. Even so though, if the story has a realistic idea behind it. I guess, I can read it. I would try to be more understanding.  I try not to read a tragedy though. I guess that's just me.
