OK, don't laugh or do laugh WITH me. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. No moral - I was tiny and the book was my first popup story book. I was mesmerized that a book could be created in that three dimensional form.
Just for kicks - here are the lyrics:
"Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
What we'll do.
Near, far, in our motor car
Oh what a happy time we'll spend.
Bang Bang Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Our fine four fendered friend.
Bang Bang Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Our fine four fendered friend.
Your sleek as a thoroughbred.
Your seats are a feather bed.
You'll turn everybody's head today.
We'll glide on our motor trip
With pride in our ownership
The envy of all we survey.
Oh Chitty You Chitty
Pretty Chitty Bang Bang
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
We love you.
And Chitty, in Chitty
Pretty Chitty Bang Bang
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang what we'll do.
Near Chitty, far Chitty, in our motor car Oh what a happy time we'll spend.
Bang Bang Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Our fine four fendered friend.
Bang Bang Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Our fine four fendered friend.....(hold)
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Fine four fendered Chitty Chitty friend."
I remember getting a 5 book collection of Roald Dahl books which included Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, Fantastic Mr Fox, The Magic Finger and James and the Giant Peach. All the stories were excellent but the one that sticks with me most was James and the Giant Peach. The story told of a young boy and the friendship he developed with some huge insects inside a peach that had grown to gigantic proportions. These insects provided the love that he was not getting from his cruel aunts with whom he lived. A touching story that involved perils and danger as well has heart warming relationships. I would recommend it and all Roald Dahl books to younger children for sure.
Mine was (and still is) "Yertle the Turtle" by Dr. Seuss. I always thought it was simply a funny story, it wasn't till years later that I realized it has a deeper meaning (the danger of letting one person, or in this case one turtle, have all the power in a society).
I still have my old copy of this book to this very day and read it to my kids occasionally. Dr. Seuss is so much fun to read out loud!!
I think my favorite books when I was young were Winnie the Pooh, When We Were Very Young (a collection of poetry for children) and just about any of the Hardy Boys books. Anything that involved an adventure was appealing to me as a boy.
My favorite childhood story book was Brer Rabbit Again. A witty rabbit with intelligent mind and full of tricks. One of the wonderful anticipating story books written by Enid Blyton read more
My favorite book that I always love to read as a child growing up was Dr. Seuss's Green Eggs and Ham. The story of Sam I am and how he was afraid to try something new like green eggs and ham inspire me to conquer my fears as a child. I read it to my daughter and she now loves it just as much as I have.
