    Is a writer always writing?

Do you, as writers, carry a pad around and write your thoughts done as you go? I'm looking for cultivate my thoughts on paper to start writing non-fiction though struggling with where to start.

I believe so. A true writer is always writing and everything he or she sees or hear or do is a potential story. Sometimes the stories are formed in the mind and documentated later. At other times the stories are scribbled on a piece of anything just to ensure the germ is not lost. Writing does not have to take place in front of a computer or laptop, stories can be written at any time any place. Yes, the true writer is always writing.
