    for me, sci fi has a foundation of facts and usage of science theories.  Fantasy is more based on legend and myths.  Sci fi is like a realistic painting of the future, where as fantasy is more abstract in nature.

    Orson Scott-Card made a non-exclusive, non-mandatory suggestion that science fiction is a extrapolation from known science, it has, steel, rivets, ray guns, space ships, space adventurers; fantasy has magic, wood, forests, bows and arrows, druids, inter continetal travel by sailing ships, mariners, covered waggons, personal transport by horse or foot.

    There is a lot of overlap between the two, but I think it can be summed up like this.  The imaginary and strange aspects in science fiction are explained by science or technology and in fantasy they are explained by magic.
