Question of using images under the "Fair use" clause.
Normally I grab my pictures from a photodumb that has free pictures that allow you to post their pictures (provided you site the source), but recently I was writing an article and thinking that the National Geographic picture of "Afgan Girl" would be perfect. The article isn't about anything related to afgan girl besides the quality of the picture it'self. The hauntingly pretty eyes, the foreshadowing of a difficult life yet still a fire that burns behind her eyes...good picture. Of course I would site the source of the picture. But can I use?
I have seen it on other sites but it does belong to the National Geographic society. They don't usually give away images, they sell them here

Fair use has nothing to do with using that photograph.
You normally cannot use an image that is for sale unless you pay for it, even if you cite the source. You can link to it but not display it on your page unless you have permission from the copyright holder. If you display it anyway, you can be subjected to a lawsuit and a whole lot of fines if you're found guilty.
I was reading that it qualified for fair use under the idea that it is a historical image or rather I found a good picture of Afghan Girl on Wiki and they argued they were using it under fair use.
If you're concerned about being able to use that specific image, you can always contact National Geographic for permission. Depending on the content of your article, they may let you use it. Can't hurt to ask.

I took pics with my camera of images on my tv screen. Is it legal to use them? Edited? Specifically, is it illegal to use them in monetized hubs?

I wanted to post this under questions, but I wrote too much. The topic may sound like a stupid question, but hear me out. I want to e-publish my first book and I am using my own pictures. Some of the pictures are of common children's toys. I want to know if that will break any copyright laws or...

I am considering publishing a novel under a pen name. I'd like to set up author pages where it is published. Where can I find a legal photo of someone else that I can use as the image that goes with my pen name author profile? Thanks!

I just checked one of my hubs where I give people the option to click and view the FULL size picture and now it looks like we have this slideshow that gives you about a half size view of the picture, if that. I know for a fact that the image was bigger because it's a screenshot of my profile,...

When our hubs were once chosen, we had a way to see what was supposed to be fixed before it appeared on a niche site. Now I don't see anything like that. It could be me, but there was a way to see what they wanted added or deleted. It's very frustrating. Yesterday I was told my hub on Zeus, the...
