Psycho-sexual domination and the objectification and abuse of women.
But it is not an intelligent examination or critique of these issues. It is a cheap and nasty bit of propaganda of the 'women really want to be raped and beaten' and 'abusive men can be redeemed by female submission' type ideology of the dominant and oppressive patriarchy.
Its poorly written book about male domination who gets pleasure from submissive woman. The story line is very weak and the characters are cardboard made. However, its very popular because of the sexual content also it explores the BDSM and err...other toys...and hence some people call it "mommy porn". However, there are plenty of BDSM books which are better written. Another reason why its popular is because of Christian Grey the hero of the book. He is described as rich and obsessive over his girl- almost like Edward of Twilight or other vampire heroes minus the fangs and blood sucking nature.
