    The word may contain other letters also.

    Well just off the top of my head I would say it has to be the word "I".

      or "a" (lowercase) which is even smaller! (can't do that with "I", unless you are e. e. cummings)

    Now, to try to help out with the question you really meant to ask (I think), the shortest word with all 5 vowels. According to the hub http://henderson0683.hubpages.com/hub/A … ng-the-web , there are two words in English that have all five vowels *in order.* They are abstemious and facetious. Of these, facetious is shorter, with only 9 letters. So that's our best so far.

    But there may be words out there with all five vowels, not in order. I dug one out of my head, auriferous (Isn't it great how my brain can produce gold?), but it has 10 letters. So, facetious is the shortest we've found so far. Anyone have any other candidates?
