What makes somebody smart?
Is it raw brainpower? Accumulated knowledge? Is it just academic learning or
does it also include your experiences, people skills and intuition?
Intelligence is difficult to define. Although IQ tests and various exams try to
measure it, deciding what makes somebody smart is hard to do.
The truth is, experience, skills, intuition as you mentioned earlier are key ingredients.
But you need to be aware that reading books exposes you thoroughly, makes you exploit your brain power. Hence, intelligence/smartness is inevitable.
The parental leadership and environment surrounding the individual makes them smart. These primary focal points resonate a smartness factor based on the interactions and reactions to situations involving the individual. However, it is up to the individual on how they will apply such smartness. So, even a smart individual may appear to be ignorant when viewed by people who are not able to view the entire lifetime of the individual. Smartness is accumulated through interaction where the individual is intelligent enough to utilize their mental capacity to display smartness to others through achievement.
Personally, I don't think intelligence is based solely upon one's academic knowledge, although that is definitely an important factor. What makes a person smart is their individual experiences, skills, intuition etc. As jhendor stated, reading books does expose you to infinitely many experiences that one may not encounter in their life, thus reinforcing intelligence.
Intelligence is nearly impossible to define and depends on the individual that you are asking. In my eyes, and intelligent person is one who understands what they are talking about, makes educated decisions, and is an overall well-rounded being.

I have often wondered about this. I personally have no education beyond that of High School. I do not hold any special qualifications and think of myself as being average in intelligence. I do read a lot and pay attention to as much as I can as a habit. If there is text I read it, even a cheesy ad...

When you are communicating with others, how much is it going to matter how "smart" they are? assuming, of course, that you are all discussing a topic that interests you!

Smart and ugly or dumb but attractive? What would you choose and why?If you have to choose between a smart and ugly person and a dumb but attractive one, what would be your choice? Why?
