Raoul Wallenberg was a humanitarian. An architect by training, he was ostensibly a special envoy at the Swedish Embassy in Budapest, he issued Swedish passports to untold numbers of Hungarian Jews destined otherwise for Auschwitz.
This was in the closing years of WWII, when Soviet forces closed on Axis borders from the east, after Romania and Bulgaria had yielded to the Allies.
Mr Wallenberg was detained by the Soviets as a possible spy, probably because they didn't believe he was with the Swedish Embassy, and he vanished from the face of the earth. Nothing else is known of him.

Humanitarian is the #1 word for him. He was also quite a passionate person.
